As for the medallion, quite impressive. I always figured the original was cast-iron though. Surprised to see what appears to be copper.
It might be plastic. They do that now with building medallions. They are pretty well impervious to weathering. They are lighter to lift into place and do less damage if they fall off. You still would not want to get hit by a falling piece of plastic that large.

An example, when the old medallion at the front of Tabaret Hall at uOttawa was badly corroded: it was replaced by a plastic one. That was a few years ago.You can not tell it is plastic unless one is told. I found out by taking a guided tour of the building a couple of years ago.

The Ogilvy one isn't plastic though ;-) They did it right and it looks stunning... It's a tad lower then the original one sat, but only I would know that LOL

What has the Rideau Center said it is? Is it iron , copper, bronze, something else?

Edit--a Google Search says the Medallion was made by Heather and Little of Toronto. They say that they work with sheet metal in copper zinc and stainless steel. Which is this?

From Heather and Littles Facebook page.

They also say that they work with stamped metal. I wonder if they made a stamp of the original and stamped it onto a sheet of copper. Kinda looks like copper to me.

The medallion was recreated using historical photographs. The original medallion is long long long gone. It was probably discarded in the mid-1940s when the "1907" portion was modernized. The first 1st floor of the 1907 portion was also modernized in the 1952-1953 I believe.

I believe its made of copper. I've been told the details of it, but they escape my mind at the moment. I'll have to talk to some people again to find out.

Regardless, it looks absolutely stunning. They did an ace job. It sits lower then it should, but whatever... No one knows that but me

Heather and Little specializes in copper roofing - they pretty well installed all the new copper roofing along Wellington Street. My bet is that it is made of copper.

I noticed it was lower. It became quite apparent after I posted this on the Canada forum. Just count the ribs between today and 1916. Do we know why they placed it lower?

No idea why it was put lower... It's not like anyone else would really notice as most people haven't seen a picture of it from when it was originally there.

Nice to see the picture from the 40s floating around now. I had that one digitized. It had never seen the public light of day before. I should've tagged it... lol

My Facebook group is the only place urbsite would've had access to it unless he went to the archives to get a hi-res copy of it! He did a great post at least.

My mind is blown at how unbelievably slow this reno has been. Since renovations started I've left the country, lived abroad for a year, moved twice while back in Canada, and changed jobs three times. And Rideau Street is still a construction hellscape... the day to day alterations are completely invisible.

Like what the hell guys. Brutal.

In all fairness, they are doing a lot of work. I'd rather they do it right than do it quickly.

Seriously, the interior of the existing structure is almost entirely renovated. The last chunk is the removal of an elevator which is happening now. The outside involved the demolition of one bridge, the entire stripping and reconstruction of another, and the painstaking restoration of a heritage fascade. The existing structure that is not currently complete is due to (a) you can't close off every entrance at once so they need to be done one at a time, (b) the construction of the LRT is physically in the way of their completion of the NW fascade, (c) it actually does take time to build and fit up an entire new building before it can be turned over to stores who then then need time to build their stores and fill them with products.

I believe their timeline was for early 2017, in time for Canada day. It should be on their website.

Correct, August 2016, it is on the Rideau Centre website under redevelopment update:

Thanks! I'm curious to find out what the new stores will be. They said up to 40 New stores right? That's quite a lot.

We know what some of them will be; Zara (Men, Women's, Kids and Home), Simons, Massimo Dutti, and Bridgehead. I believe those are or were at one point on the Rideau Centre website.

Based on previous articles on Retail Insider and Ottawa Magazine, Zara Home, Zara Kids, and Massimo Dutti were said to be coming.

A quick search on the job site indeed shows that they are currently staffing for Anthropologie, H&M, and Ted Baker London.
