It's a huge draw for the 18 and under 905 crowd. Not that people don't come from all over and sneak booze in. To be fair imagine a crowd that size full of drunks. Nothing good would come if it.

I'm guessing everyone who wanted to just brought their own.

I've never seen anyone under 40 do the Champagne-at-midnight thing. At least here, it's all about kissing someone at midnight. You have literally the entire rest of the night to drink!

Or alternately I guess you could shoot back that glass at 12 and spend the rest of the night making out. That actually seems better.

What you can't kiss and drink at the stroke of midnight? Since I was 19 we always do the bubbly. Personally I hate it.

Nice homes Laceoflight.

Johnnie's Lunchbox has pretty regular hours - from 9-9 I think. I have a friend who works there in the kitchen and my father goes there for lunch occasionally as he works next door.

The food is bland but edible.

Hard to kiss someone with a glass on your lips

There's a certain indifference (or even disdain) towards "luxury-for-its-own-sake" here that makes the whole Champagne thing rare. People are less inclined to do something just because it's "classy", and if it's also expensive and interrupts the goings-on then you can be sure that most people won't bother (I don't know if the champagne-at-midnight would be considered "classy" in Toronto, but my guess is yes). Conspicuous consumption of luxury is, more than anything else, considered kind of douchey/pretentious here.

Although I'm sure you could find thousands of people who had a glass of Champagne at midnight here in Halifax. But not tens of thousands. And most of them would be a generation or two older than me.

For us, it's always been a bit of a tongue-in-cheek "classy."

The champagne on New Year's thing is just a really good excuse to rationalize buying a nice bottle of champers that you wouldn't normally buy... which is precisely what I do

In T.O/Van/Montreal it's not just for the old. My first experience with it was when I was 19 at the brunswick House. Even if it was just for older generations the Hipsters would be all over it by now.

Couldn't they find something a bit more obscure than boring old Champagne? haha

Like absinthe or something?

Absinthe was so 2008. Negroni's were a hit this year.

I've never been up Grouse. Last week I noticed you can see it from Gibsons. This summer I have to finally go up it.

Love this angle, over Bannerman Park.

Downtown is off screen to the left. To the right of The Rooms and the Basilica is the portion of the old city (small, but probably accounts for about half of the rowhouse if you including everything behind the photographer and toward the horizon) that you normally can't see behind the hill.

This one cracks me up. You see this in the summer - cruise ship passengers flocking to anywhere with free WiFi. The City is working on bringing free WiFi to the whole downtown to help.
