Many would still rather have this development as opposed to the parking lots and underutilized land that is currently there.

I don't often agree with this sentiment but I'll make an exception in this instance. That unused land is a blight on the Core of the city. Anything that gets built here, let alone a decently tall hotel tower, is a massive improvement. To me it's good filler. It's not a focal point of the skyline or the Beltline. Plus it will bridge the gap that the rail corridor creates and make it less of a noticeable scar.

I don't understand how some people find this tower offensive at all. Sure it's just a box but I think it's aesthetically pleasing, it's not boring but it's not busy. I mean I don't think it's great but it's not bad at all. I basically agree with what you're saying O-tac. Very good skyline filler and it will form a much needed bridge between the very tall 9th Avenue towers and the much shorter beltline towers. With so much development on 10th Avenue, the gap between the downtown and Beltline skylines should be virtually erased by 2019.

Well it maybe better than a parking lot but that seems to be it's only redeeming features.

Saying a building is Ok because it beats a parking lot is a pretty low standard. It actually wouldn't be too bad if they unified the colour because the base looks decent and the tower designs are OK but the 2 different colours makes it look like 2 different buildings glued together.

It would take very little to make it a decent building but those colours make it look like a bigger version of Edmonton's monstrosity The Venetian.

Lmao this is an extreme comparison. I can't even begin to see where you're getting it from. This is a modern glass tower with a 2-colour colour scheme that will have a immeasurably positive impact on the urban realm of a major pedestrian street, while the Venetian is a faux historic 7-storey dumpster fire with an untold number of different colours that stretches for a block and a half in a very high visibility area of Strathcona. One enhances a blighted area greatly, while another blights a great area, so it's really beyond comparison.

Venetian is actually a faux historic 7-storey dumpster fire with an untold number of different colours that stretches nearly one whole block in a very high visibility area just on the edge of downtown.

The comparison is not apt, regardless; the hotel is light years ahead of this:

What's with that podium? It looks like commie block slabs from the 70's.

I think that podium fits in well with the streetscape between 2121 and Eglinton.

Yeah, the podium looks much better in context, not so much when it's depicted as a standalone structure. Surprised they are able to get away without replacing office space though (unless I'm missing something). This is what's being replaced: https://goo.gl/maps/XpqtW3TNVZR2

58 Atlantic Avenue is great. http://urbantoronto.ca/news/2016/01/12-storey-office-building-planned-58-atlantic-avenue

Along with being a matter of taste, I think it's a matter of context here. Sure this tower with its bold colours and (some would say busy) "detailing" (for lack of a better word) would look very out of place in Vancouver's sea of blue and green glass, but Calgary's architecture tends to be a bit bolder (ie much wider range of colours, unconventional shapes, etc.)

This proposal would fit in with Calgary's existing aesthetic better than it would in most cities, and the rendering just doesn't do a very good job of showing this. Just my opinion of course.

Ya it wouldn't fit in in Vancouver or Victoria for that matter but it's far from hideous IMO.

That, in Victoria, would be surrealism made "real".

OK, OK it's not as bad as the Venetian but I still think it looks both silly and ugly.

I do completely agree with Hali87 about Calgary's skyline. Calgary has managed to avoid the blue & green glass monotony where one building just morphs into another. Coal Harbour and Southcore look more like glass walls than individual buildings.

Calgary's more daring embrace of different designs and colours have resulted in the city having an amazing skyline and I wouldn't want to it lose that character. All I'm saying is that the 2 colours stuck together just don't work.

They remind me of puzzles where 2 pieces don't go together but instead of finding the piece's true mate you cheat and squish the 2 together as hard as you can and hope no one will notice.

— to lose quality office space at yonge/eglinton.

However, I admit that the podium, along with the 2008 Quantum podium makes for a nice streetwall.

I find it looks refreshing and straighforward. In most cases, I prefer it to windowwall and/or random cutouts and protruding glass cubes/balconies.

Really? The tallest looks nearly 35 storeys, that's massive for Kitchener.

How real is this?

The Kitchener project is a local developer - the total area of the site was recently expanded to five acres. It will be across the street from the new Google building and the new multimodal transit hub, and across the train tracks from the future Innovation District. I new that renders would be coming soon, but I couldn't say if this is what is really proposed or just a concept.
