It is just my simple thought. Image Oakridge-Metrotown in 15 min, Metrotown-Brentwood in 10 min and Brentwood-YVR in 35 min. Connect almost every Vancouver's high population density area. It will be the Yamanote Line(Tokyo) of Vancouver.

Nice fantasy. I like it but theres no space to store the trains. The sharp curves characterize for LRT, which we know can't keep up to the demand, especially with so many sought after destinations.

I like your idea very much, too, but as Express691 said, too many hairpin turns. If you could eliminate a station here or there, you might get a manageable curve..... but that's compromising.

I would adapt it by letting the SE corner stop at M-Town, then continue on with the Expo Line, with a junction for trains going to Brentwood, except continuing up to Hastings.
From there (with a curve) it could go West along Hastings to the CBD. then loop through the West end to Kerrisdale.

Another sticky point comes at 41 & Arbutus. The turn is too acute. Perhaps a tunnel with an outward "loop" would give it the flexibility it needs.
Great idea, though. I think a number of people (inc myself) have mulled over something like this. It would be great !!

I had drawn one (mostly tunnelled) from Hastings and Willingdon (to meet up with a future Hastings Line) to Brentwood and down to Metrotown. Then drop down to 49th, just south of Central Park - that would soften the turn. Run on 49th and then up to 41st, ending at Oakridge Station.

I don't know that Vancouver needs another north - south rail type line right away, esp when everywhere else in the region needs lines too and has had to do without. Anyway it's not as if Arbutus is going to be available anytime soon..

New guy here - would it be it be possible to extend that one across the Burrard Inlet to North Van? They've been asking for better access to downtown since forever, so that might help your case...

Oh there has been plenty of talk of extending Skytrain / rail of some sort across the water to North Van on here. It's fantasy talk though as there isn't the money for it and higher needs for what little money there is.

they should build an 8 lane tunnel directly connecting to the Upper Levels. SkyTrain down the middle of the tunnel. close the Lions Gate to everything but Pedestrians, Bikes, Buses, Emergency vehicles.

Another train fire on Canada Line today. Sounds like it happened on the bridge between Marine Drive and Bridgeport. They brought a rescue train up beside it and evacuated passengers across the centre walkway.

They shut down the Skytrain tonight due to the earthquake. I got to Commercial-Broadway sometime soon after midnight and the gates were closed and the blue coat on the other side was rude and obnoxious to people who only wanted to know what was going on. I found out from a couple other people who were in the station that there were no overhead announcements and they had no idea what was going on - just that suddenly staff were screaming at them to evacuate the station. Like that's not going to cause panic... I encouraged them to complain about it and just filled out one myself.

I'm on the island at the moment and the earthquake wasn't terribly large, translink probably could have kept the trains running, though this does beg the question of what safety features exist for stopping the train automatically during an earthquake.

Jesus, it was a circus. Some people were trying to open doors and staff were literally freaking out.

This City is not prepared to deal with an Earthquake, plain and simple. Staff had no idea what to do last night, and everything was done haphazardly. Fortunately it was a fairly weak earthquake but I shudder to think what would happen in a M6.0 or greater earthquake where there could be possible damage to the guide-way or skybridge (I heard the guideway between Main Street to Broadway-Commercial and 22nd St to New West are most prone to failure should we see a significant earthquake)

There has to be emergency procedures in place. Staff should be better prepped; no reason to be shouting and screaming every time an incident occurs. Even during the breakdowns, you had Skytrain staff freaking out. The onus is up on Translink/Skytrain to hire staff that don't get easily overwhelmed because the last thing you need is complete chaos.

I assume that each VCC has an inertia sensor anchored to the foundation of the building they are stored in. Like with every other operation the VCC does when at least two indicate a trip they tell the whole system to stop.

I can totally see an outbound MK I crammed with people spilling out of bars being the most claustrophobic and terrifying thing ever to be in during an earthquake.

It sounded to me like there isn't a documented earthquake plan. Control operators were told that they needed to stop all trains and to direct field staff to evacuate passengers and close stations. Nobody seemed to know what the plan was beyond that. The control supervisor called the VP of maintenance, who said they should be able to resume service after doing a full sweep of the guideway to check for damage.

I'm curious about Canada Line since they didn't appear to do anything in response to the earthquake.
