It sounds like it's been closed for about a month based on some comments on their Instagram page.

Looks like a lot of unhappy people had recently returned merchandise only to be given gift cards for store credit, for a store that quietly closed their doors the following week.

At this point the Bombers are more likely to win the Stanley Cup in in 2016 than the Jets.

That said, in terms of retail my thinking is 2016 will be a relatively quiet year as there is going to be a big bang in 2017 when Outlet at Seasons opens. We should see the opening of Save on Foods in 2016. It would also not be surprisingly to see Sears finally go down the drain but they seem fairly resistant to going dark so it could go the other way. The other one to watch is will additional Sobey's Extra locations be announced, ie Henderson, or will the announced location on Pembina be the only one. Watch for potential "moving sales" on Boxing Day 2016 in the Kennaston Commons stores. The final one to watch is if the Kit and Ace pop up at Polo Park becomes a permanent store.

I notice the new corridor at Polo seemed to either have changed tenants already or just not be 100% full?? I didn't really pay attention when it first opened. But seemed like it was a bit empty when i went through last week, or might just be me. Is that where the pop-up store is located?

^^ I was actually surprised last December that the new Polo corridor seemed to have a vacancy rate of about 33% back then with a long lead up to finding tenants. I am not an expert on it but don't think they lost any permanent tenants in that section yet and actually relocated at least one existing tenant into the area. It definitely seemed to be filling in slower than I would have expected.

I'm fairly certain they lost Mexx, did they not? I did work on the expansion and yes there was a few vacancies when it opened, a couple were filled with holiday shops.

Where about on Henderson would Sobey's put a Sobey's Extra? they just spent a bundle remodeling the store at Northdale.

Would they re-brand the Safeway at River East to a new format Sobey's?

By the way I see that the Northdale Sobey's has dropped being open 24 hours after the remodeling , its back to normal hours closing at 11pm.

My thinking is the Northdale Sobey's would convert to the Sobeys Extra banner as it has been serving as their Manitoba flagship.

Though, it would be disappointing to see the McDermot Ave. location close. I would love to know if they are succeeding in Winnipeg. I strolled by the one at Polo Park recently and it was empty in an otherwise crowded mall. I also walked by the McDermot store. It was also empty, but there was a huge snow storm at the time.

What is the square footage of a typical Sobeys Extra store? Is Sobeys Northdale large enough to convert to a Sobeys Extra format?

The Kit and Ace pop up store in Polo Park is closing December 31st. I know because I asked when I went to buy a $150 long sleeved t-shirt. I also got a Kit and Ace branded bottle of water to go! I think Kit and Ace will do well here, I have already bought 7 shirts and a hat from them. Great clothes.

Sobey's Extra come in at about 58,000 sq ft from what information I can see on the web about previous Extra stores that have opened.

Information from when the Northdale Sobey's opened shows it at 43,000 sq ft.

Re Kit and Ace, the plan could still be close the Polo pop up and open a permanent store later in the year. It felt a little odd when they announced the Exchange store for Winnipeg. I get that it is the model they follow in other cities but other retailers that follow that pattern always locate in a mall here.

In terms of the future of Kit and Ace in Winnipeg, I would say they will be here in 12 months but would be a coin toss in 36 months. There plan is to grow their physical presence extremely quickly and it doesn't matter what the local market does as the owners have very deep pockets to back things. At some point that will change though and local market conditions will start factoring into continued operations.

--

As for the Northdale Sobey's possibly becoming a Sobey's Extra, the question isn't so much what the size of the existing building is but if they have maxed out the size of the building that can be on the site. Another prime Sobey's Extra conversion, space depending, would be the Madison Square Safeway. It would give the Sobey's brand a toe into the Polo market. The Taylor one could be on the list too a little further down the line as it is the only purpose built Sobey's in Winnipeg, all the other's are IGA conversions.

I can't see them expanding the building footprint after doing all these renos. Wouldn't they do it together if they were planning to convert to a Sobey's Extra?

It wouldn't surprise me to see Sobeys sell the Henderson/Kimberley location and see Loblaws open a No Frills or something in that spot.

I highly doubt that Sobeys will open another location on Henderson especially after that major overhaul of the Northdale location.

I need some enlightenment. Maybe someone can help me out? Why does Home Hardware not have a store in the city?

I've always wondered this too! I enjoy Home Hardware commercials a lot.
