Steel is more expensive than cast in place concrete, but in an office environment when large floorplates with clear spans are desirable, this added cost is offset by higher rents. No such benefit exists in residential construction. Large spans are acheivable using post- tensioned concrete, and mass reductions, but the system is stigmatized in the residential sector in western canada, so is rarely specified for such projects at this time, though it is used extensively in infrastructure and commercials applications. City Center and the WLRT both made use of this system. You can bet it is in used where concrete structures span for long distances.

I totally forgot that the whole block was to be renovated. Really hope that happens. The Len Werry is horrid. Getting a modern reclad of that dumpster fire would be almost like getting a whole new building right there.

Even more depressing of a place to work in as only 1 of very 8 of what appears to be windows from the exterior is in reality a window on the inside. The rest just have painted steel plates behind them and if I remember correctly, the east side of the Len Werry has no actual windows on the inside, just steel plates.

Will this situation be remedied in the reclad? Seems like something that could be fairly easily fixed if the exterior is being replaced. Here's hoping!

Even better, a conversion to loft-style condos!

I'm not sure if more windows for the Len Werry are in the cards as the building houses data equipment and a control centre.

Where would you propose that TELUS move all of their equipment they currently have in the Len Werry?

Nice of them to put in fake windows. They could have built something like this Bell building in Ottawa:

Just curious since I've been out of the loop on Calgary developments for a while. With the oil price crash and the situation with Calgary's downtown vacancy rate, would the Telus Sky be affected by it? Or will it still go on, especially since the main tenant is a telecom company?

I still remember the dark days in the 80s when buildings under construction stopped but it would be nice if there is some kind of reassurance that this beauty will still go through. But regardless, be honest and don't be too over optimistic. I'd rather know for certainty than to be given false hopes on the status of the project.

TELUS' data centre bunker on 10th Avenue SW just west of 14th Street isn't much better as are a number of other data centre bunkers on 10th Avenue SW, data centres and telco central offices are strengthened buildings that usually dispense with a lot of windows but at the same time, they shouldn't have to look like that Ottawa mess.

The former Bank of Canada vaults downtown worked out well for Bell though. I prefer an underground solution for this type of infrastructure. Repurposed space is the only cost- effective way to get it though. Maybe the city should look into turning the LRT station under city hall into one of these, could have been making profit for the last 35 years. Would be a great space for it. Well, aside from the flood risk, anyways. We are almost certainly never going to see it actually used for trains...

Every time I walk past this beauty, I just think "I can't friggin wait until you're 222 meters in the air!"... it's hard to believe that Brookfield is so imposing already but isn't even past the 200 meter mark yet. Imagine how insane Telus Sky is gonna look at that height!

They are both going to look monstrous. Telus is going to have a totally different vibe than the other talls in Calgary. It is going to be fun to see how it ends up.
