Steel is more expensive than cast in place concrete, but in an office environment when large floorplates with clear spans are desirable, this added cost is offset by higher rents. No such benefit exists in residential construction. Large spans are acheivable using post- tensioned concrete, and mass reductions, but the system is stigmatized in the residential sector in western canada, so is rarely specified for such projects at this time, though it is used extensively in infrastructure and commercials applications. City Center and the WLRT both made use of this system. You can bet it is in used where concrete structures span for long distances.
