You'll see many arenas/stadiums switch to dimmable LED fixtures in the next few years. The technology has really come a long way over the last 2 years and the affordability factor is where it needs to be. The power savings are immense, and many controls systems are becoming more universal so the integration is starting to get where it needs to be.

Even a basic controls system can be setup to control smoke, fireworks, audio, video and now in house LED lighting (not just generic spot lights). Simple programs are created where you basically hit an execute button and a pre-programmed "show" executes which can include the mentioned smoke, fireworks, audio, video, lighting, etc. With many organizations dumping tons of money into the fan experience, you can bet that dimmable LED lights will be amongst the most sought after upgrade. I imagine True North will upgrade their lights in the next 2-3 years as many NHL Arenas currently have it in their plans.

So looks like Ottawa will have a new downtown arena in.......about 8 to 10 years I guess!!!

Both proposals for LeBreton Flats redevelopment include NHL-calibre arena

Don Butler, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: December 15, 2015 | Last Updated: December 15, 2015 7:21 PM EST

The Ottawa Senators will play in a new downtown arena if the National Capital Commission accepts either of the two development proposals for LeBreton Flats submitted Tuesday.

An arena has always been at the centre of the proposal by Rendez Vous LeBreton, which includes Senators Sports & Entertainment, the company that owns Ottawa’s NHL team.

The only other team to file a detailed development plan by Tuesday’s deadline, DCDLS Group – formerly Devcore Group – had originally proposed multiple cultural institutions around a grande allée as its anchor attraction.

But a source with knowledge of the proposals said the DCDLS Group’s proposal has evolved, and also includes “an NHL-calibre arena” as well as cultural elements.

“It looks like the Sens can move downtown no matter what,” the source said.

The NCC invited four private-sector teams last February to develop detailed proposals for the development of a primary 9.3-hectare parcel of land across from the war museum and, if required, an optional 12.3-hectare parcel to the west.

The Senators’ current arena, Canadian Tire Centre, opened nearly 19 years ago and will be at least 25 years old by the time a new downtown arena could be built. If the team were to remain there, it would require expensive repairs.

A downtown arena appeals to Senators’ owner Eugene Melnyk because it would be located on the city’s light rail transit line, eliminating the current crawl to Kanata along the Queensway. As well, its central location would make it easier to draw fans from Gatineau and Ottawa’s east end.

Knowing the NCC they'll reject both proposals as not being culturally stimulating and leave the land empty for another 15 years.

I think you're significantly underestimating the NCC's commitment to building and maintaining a capital for all Canadians; that field could easily remain vacant for another thirty years at least.

Even if that happens they'll still probably beat calgary to the finish line by a wide margin!

Why the desire to put such a large roof on BMO ?
Seems like a big expense, I would think the money could have put to better use in other ways to improve the stadium.
Just my opinion tho

Grass to be weighed against other Rogers Centre renovations
SHI DAVIDI DECEMBER 17, 2015, 10:00 PM

TORONTO – Installing a dirt infield at Rogers Centre is possible for the 2016 season but retrofitting the aging domed stadium to support natural grass will be weighed against other needed renovations, according to Toronto Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro.

Under former president and CEO Paul Beeston, the team commissioned experts at the University of Guelph earlier this year to examine the feasibility of a grass field with an eye toward switching to a natural surface in 2018.

Shapiro, speaking Thursday at the annual meeting of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s Toronto chapter, didn’t completely kibosh the plan, but made it clear that it wasn’t the be-all, end-all for a stadium in need of a major renovation.

"My opinion is we don’t need (natural grass)," he said. "My opinion is clearly it would be better, it’s just a question of alternatives and what we’re going to have to choose between."

Shapiro is working on what he described as a "comprehensive plan" of building needs, from basic infrastructure requirements such as fortifying the dome’s concrete, keeping the roof working, renewing seats and updating the scoreboard to fan-experience details such as how the seating bowl is configured and improving other amenities.

"We’re going to have a capital project list that deals with how do we renovate Rogers Centre," Shapiro explained. "We’re going to have to prioritize. It’s like anything in life, you’re not going to be able to do the entire laundry list. On that list likely will be grass once we are certain it can be done and understand the cost-implications of doing it.

"Watching from a distance, the way the new turf played it doesn’t detract from the game. It’s obviously a game that’s more fun to watch with natural grass, but being a dome, I think the turf plays extremely well right now."

Assistant GM Tony LaCava added the dome’s new turf, installed last season, has reduced the toll on players’ bodies and that complaints have been reduced dramatically. That, coupled with the building’s many other needs and the evolution of sports watching, appears to be altering the club’s perspective.

"Ballpark experiences now need to be compelling, they need to draw people out of their home," said Shapiro.

A budget has yet to be set for the renovations, although estimates have ranged from the $200-$400 million range.

"We need to come forward with a comprehensive plan of what the building needs are and where we think the highest impact for our fans and the highest impact for our players (are) for scope of projects that exist," said Shapiro.

Meanwhile, general manager Ross Atkins said the Blue Jays continue to hunt for pitching to bolster the club, adding that discussions are ongoing both in trade and free agents.

"Really it’s just pitching in general," he said. "More likely it will be a bullpen add but we’re going to stay open-minded and if there’s a way we can create it, just add depth to our pitching and fortify our pitching staff. It’s definitely not limited to the bullpen, I just think it’s more likely that’s where we can add."

LaCava said the Blue Jays will also soon have a series of minor-league signings to announce.

Cover fans from rain and sun.

I'm sure other minor renovations will be completed in coming seasons. All hope is not lost.

Still $200-$400 million that's a lot of cash. Could buy a couple of stadiums if they wanted.

These pics don't do BMO Field justice, it looks fantastic from the highway, really tall and imposing. It will soon have as much visual presence as Skydome.

The canopy makes good sense. It does give fans the best of both worlds in some respects, you get an outdoor stadium with shelter. As nice as Commonwealth Stadium is, there are hardly any seats that offer any protection so if there's pouring rain your game experience is going to be marred... not an issue at IGF, except for a handful of endzone seats.

Not saying it isn't, but clearly Rogers is shifting the conversation from the all-out flashing red light urgency of replacing artificial turf with grass because the Blue Jays players were going to start dropping dead soon, to one where there are maybe more important things to consider changing or updating. Suddenly the turf issue is not quite so important. I presume that the fans will just go along with this?

I think one of the major reasons for the drop in TV ratings is how poorly the Leafs are doing. After all those years of poor hockey, the Leaf fans are finally fed up with it and have looked elsewhere for entertainment. Even tickets to games are much easier to get than they used to be. It was really bad timing for Rogers. However, the resurgence in interest for the Blue Jays are making up for it.

I never understood why hockey fans, particularly in Canada, took such great pride in supporting their teams and selling out games no matter how abysmal they are, Toronto being case study number one in that regard.

I honestly wonder if the American teams try harder to win (as organizations, I mean... obviously the players all try hard) because if they don't, they'll quickly fade into complete and utter irrelevance in their home markets? Look at Chicago... for a few years they sucked and the fans stayed away. It got to the point where the Wolves were drawing more fans on some nights. Then they shook things up and look at how they've turned that franchise around.

Meanwhile in Canada, sellouts every night and things seldom change. The smartest thing that Leafs fans could do is to create a little red ink on the MLSE balance sheet and watch the urgency set in.

I think its just Rogers itself. Then again TV has changed. I don't subscribe to cable of any sort anymore. I get all my sports through reading the web now. It suits me fine. Every now and then I kind of miss watching a bit of a hockey game, but not really.
