apparently the hotel rehab at 13th and spruce has stopped due to union interference and the developer is seeking injunction to stop the blocking of the site. Similar to the Goldtex mess.

It's a love-hate relationship. I would presume most of the trades at the work site that we keep an eye on are union members. Just can't believe there's not enough work to go around. I remember seeing an article about the shortages of union laborers and some coming back into the trade from retirement.

Sure. I don't have a problem with unions exactly... in fact, my mom is in a union at work, and my uncle is a union worker on some construction projects here in Philadelphia.

My issue is the fact that when these unions get outbid, or are not selected for construction projects, that they are then holding up such projects with lawsuits and tormenting the onsite workers. It's absurd and should absolutely not be allowed.

read the article on philly.com about the use of the inflatable rats. It explains how they deploy them such that they aren't violating any rules and they are protected by First Amendment. That doesn't cover blocking site access, but the issue I raised with the hotel conversion is mentioned in the same article.

Was going to post this. They've been doing work for a week or two on the building on the east side of broad, but just today they put up fencing and moved some equipment in for the building on the west side of broad.

I was walking through Chinatown today and couldn't believe how many buildings are adding floors, there is an amazing amount of upward construction, which made me wonder why more surface lots aren't being developed. It feels like some infill would really be great, particularly the 800 block of Arch and the lot at 8th and Race.

Its not that simple. Many of the problems and bad PR moves are the direct actions of the union management, not the workers. Generally speaking, the workers are fine and capable. The issue is that their leaders are stuck in the 1960s and are oblivious to the PR damage they cause with their stupid tactics.

^^^ This, plus the SLS (knock on wood), plus the Pearl development at Locust fills in EVERYTHING between City Hall and the north side of Lombard except for one lot (adjacent to a small building on the NE corner of Broad and Lombard).

Developers join forces to build 'gateway' project on North Broad
