Toronto loves Hamilton, here's your proof

What to do if you're young and cool and living in Toronto? Spend the day in Hamilton

CBC News Posted: Apr 24, 2015 2:24 PM ET

Tickets in Toronto for a day-long bus tour of Hamilton's natural beauty and diverse neighbourhoods sold out in less than 24 hours.

It's official. Toronto loves Hamilton. Don't tell the Argonauts.

Toronto woman Jo Flatt organized the Hamiltime Road Trip. She wanted people in her city to know how interesting Hamilton is. There were plenty of takers. Listen, on this page, to the interview she does with Helen Mann of CBC Toronto's Metro Morning filling in for Matt Galloway. The interview aired early Friday morning.

Flatt thinks Hamilton is "one of the province's best-kept secrets." And she wants more people in Toronto to know more about the city.

Her tour promises "a hike in the waterfalls, a downtown walking tour, and an inside look at Hamilton's neighourhood diversity and industrial past."

She said the group will meet with civic leaders "who have really been putting in a lot of effort to make Hamilton more vibrant and beautiful." Flatt told Mann that includes Glen Norton, the city's Manager of Urban Renewal and Jason Thorne, the city's General Manager of Planning and Economic Development as well as Donna Reed the founder of The Hamilton Store.

Flatt said it's not just the real estate prices that attracts Torontonians. "I think (there's) something about the scale of Hamilton," she said. "People can connect really, really easily with city leaders and make things happen, see that difference far more quickly than they could in a big city like Toronto."

That's an admirer's perspective of life in Hamilton. True or not? What do you think?

We'll connect with the Torontonians on Saturday and find out what inspired them to spend their day touring Hamilton.

The group leaves Toronto for Hamilton at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and returns home at 6:30 p.m.

Here is the audio interview

^What are they gonna talk about? The Toronto all sports radio stations often have a hard time filling the airwaves - lots of repetition. I wonder...

I wonder if they'll just rebroadcast hours from their other sports stations.

I feel a bit bad about CHML and their people losing the broadcast. They've been committed to the Cats for years.

I have to believe that will be the case. It's impossible to fill up the programming day when all you really have extra to offer is content of one team.

Have to wonder if it even makes any sense nowadays, are there even many people who listen to radio still?

No idea who's going to be doing all the chatting but my guess is they made offers to local radio personalities currently toiling away in Toronto like Stephen Brunt, Jeff Blair and perhaps Damian Cox. Can't imagine any of them leaving their present gigs, however. Doug Farraway was always good - don't know what he's up to at the moment...

Nobody is going to be doing the talking. Probably one local show a day and live brodcasts of games. The rest will be syndicated from the mother station TSN 1050.

Andy McNamara new voice of Ticats

Hamilton Spectator By Ken Peters

The new voice of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' is former Toronto Argonauts' sideline reporter Andy McNamara.

McNamara, a nine-year sports broadcast veteran who has also covered National Lacrosse League contests for TSN telecasts and served as a radio host, will team with veteran Ticat color commentator John Salavantis, 73, beginning June 19 in Winnipeg for the club's second pre-season contest.

McNamara replaces veteran CHML sportscaster Rick Zamperin, who provided the play- by-play for the past seven seasons but won't continue as part of the switch of Cat broadcasts to 1150 CKOC. Zamperin remains as assistant program director at CHML.

TSN veterans Rod Black and Chris Schultz will team up to broadcast Monday's Tiger-Cat preseason game against the Ottawa Redblacks.

After that contest McNamara and Salavantis will take over for the remainder of the season working with pre and post-game host Matt Cauz and former McMaster Marauder quarterback Marshall Ferguson, who will handle the sideline reporting.

The changes were confirmed Thursday by TSN radio national programming director Robert Gray as part of the re-branding of CKOC this fall into TSN 1150 all-sports radio in Hamilton.

So far Ferguson, 23, is the station's only hire. He is under contract to provide podcasts and blog reports from the Tiger-Cat training camp to CKOC Radio 1150.

Gray said TSN and Bell Media are looking to hire about 15 employees eventually when the re-launch rolls out this fall.

"When we get things up and going later this fall with the full launch of the sports format we'll be hiring for a number of positions. We'll have news on that coming out in the next couple of months," Gray said.

Gray confirmed the station will look predominately at Hamilton media reps for those jobs.

"Right now it is still the Classic Hits CKOC format for the summer and with the Ticat games, with additional coverage on the CKOC website. The full launch with the full TSN branding will come in the fall." And we'll start then with local shows as well.

"I think it's going to be great. I think Hamilton is totally deserving of an all sports station. You have a great sporting community there, lots of great sporting history. It's going to be a lot of fun and I know we're getting a lot of interest about it," Gray said.

CKOC will be one of six TSN stations across the country which will be carrying live coverage of the FIFA Women's World Cup which begins Saturday.

CHCH-TV Implements Major Restructuring to Remain on the Air

December 11, 2015 05:37 PM

Press Releases

CHCH-TV IMPLEMENTS MAJOR RESTRUCTURING TO REMAIN ON THE AIR

CHANNEL 11 L.P., CHCH-TV’S FORMER SUPPLIER OF LOCAL NEWS, FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY

HAMILTON, ON, Dec. 11, 2015/ CHCH-TV and its parent company, Channel Zero, have implemented a restructuring that will allow the channel to remain viable and for it to continue to deliver local news in the Greater Hamilton area. Channel 11 L.P., the entity that has created local news for CHCH since 2009, has in turn filed for bankruptcy effective today. CHCH is not ceasing operations or going off the air. CHCH and Channel Zero remain committed to the delivery of local news. Starting Monday, CHCH, joined by many of the familiar on-air personalities, will continue to broadcast the local news that viewers have been watching for over 60 years.

“When CHCH was acquired in 2009, funding support for local television was available, along with healthy national advertising revenue. That has since changed dramatically,” said Romen Podzyhun, Chairman and CEO, Channel Zero. “Despite ongoing efforts over the past two years to make CHCH sustainable following serious cuts to local broadcasting support and declines in national advertising, Channel Zero is no longer in a position to continue subsidizing the losses stemming from the station’s local news operations. This decision was extremely difficult but necessary to allow CHCH to remain on the air.”

CHCH will continue to broadcast with a new format that keeps the core news broadcasts intact, but contains fewer overall hours of local news. Starting on December 12, CHCH will transition to a new schedule that includes CHCH’s popular 6pm and 11pm weekday news broadcasts, and starting Tuesday, Morning Live will return. In addition to the familiar faces, viewers can expect to see the same high quality local news programming that CHCH has delivered to the region for over 60 years.

“We are so grateful and proud of the excellent programming and years of service that the employees of Channel 11 L.P. have given to this community” continued Podzyhun. “Business decisions like this are hardest because they impact the personal lives of people we care about deeply.”

CHCH will continue to exceed the CRTC local broadcasting requirements as part of its commitment to its license and the Region. Furthermore, CHCH and its parent company, Channel Zero, are financially unaffected by this filing. Channel Zero looks forward to participating in the CRTC’s upcoming hearing on the policy framework for local and community television programming in the New Year.

About Channel Zero

Channel Zero is an independent Canadian broadcasting and media group, which holds assets in television broadcasting and film distribution.

More from the spec.com

Quote:
At least 129 full-time employees and close to 30 part-timers have been let go as part of a massive restructuring of local news at CHCH TV.

A newsroom staffer says the number of cuts was announced in a meeting with senior management Friday.

Of that group, 71 people have reportedly been offered new jobs, but it's unclear in what capacity.

With the changes, CHCH is expected to reduce its local programming from 80 hours to 25 hours a week, Unifor media sector director Howard Law reportedly told The Canadian Press.

Wonder what they'll fill the air with, American TV shows cost money. Perhaps they'll fill the air with non-stop commercials.

A lot of good reporters lost their jobs today, Melissa Raftis, Cindy Csordas, Mark Hebscher, Lori DeAngelis, Donna Skelly, Elise Copps, Matt Hayes, etc.

Meanwhile, much smaller cities in the US seem to be able to support 4 network affiliates. I do not get that.
