in all seriousness, when you walk by at prime time parking time, the lot is never full. so either way someone is losing money on this or theyre holding out for something better...

The reason the surface lot just north of Portage and Main is lightly used is when One Portage and Main was starting up they took the then popular lot, close it and had all the users relocated.

Looks like a parks Canada deal. I googled Canadian icetival inc. and it was incorporated in July. Principals are three folks from Pullan Kammerloch. I don't know how much the forks Corp and parks Canada coordinate their planning. In any event I hope this goes ahead and that it compliments rather than competes with the forks winter trails.

The directors aren't from PKF, that's just the firm they're using. It appears that one of the directors is the guy who runs the Santorini Dairy on Dufferin?

The two others have Chinese-sounding names, which makes me wonder if there is a bit of a Harbin connection going on here? That city pioneered this kind of winter playground thing.

Yes, I agree completely. The local hospitals have until recently lacked these kinds of spaces which are kind of surprising given how much movement there is in and out of them. Having a central gathering point in the same manner as other busy semi-public spaces like an airport only makes sense, and it's a great amenity for people who are passing through there.

What are some thoughts on the area around Central Park? I for one would like to see more infills around it, and I believe it could be a fun neighborhood with so many ethnic groups. Does anyone think some of the Manitoba Housing units should be replaced with market rentals, while dispersing Manitoba Housing units around in other areas?

I just want higher density. The Central Park/West End could use alot more of it. Actually... high-density market units, medium-density Manitoba Housing along with a little more retail.

I completely agree with the more retail aspect, it's needed. The few spaces around the park are full (IIRC) and the shops like the convenience store are always busy.

According to this article (behind paywall) the city is considering its options with the old Canada Post office tower on Graham. Among the options being considered is partial demolition.

Sounds like province is already doing everything it can to save the City of Winnipeg from itself. Maybe it will have to bail the city out of this mess too.
