It was built in 1955, and the historic looking façade is only on two sides of the building (East and South). I'm normally all for preservation, but I'm not sure there's much worth saving here.

Edit: I found another source that says 1928. Maybe this building already had a "façadectomy"?

It looks like it did. The historic facade has a an International style looking addition on top of it.

Those photos of Glenwood Place are probably a month old. They have the parking garage up for the aprtments and the walls up on the mega-Kroger.

Hines Pushes New Strategy at Atlantic Station.

Hines recently hired SRS to lease the property.SRS Real Estate Partners is taking its new leasing assignment serious. The firm, which took over leasing at Atlantic Station in Midtown Atlanta recently, is hunting for restaurant and fashion tenants at the International Council of Shopping Center’s (ICSC) New York National Deal Making Conference this week.
SRS executive vice president and market leader Ray Uttenhove says “Midtown is the most dynamic in-town market in the Southeast,The market is hungry for more shopping, dining and entertainment options, and we plan to elevate Atlantic Station as a super regional destination with a variety of popular tenants.”Our team has set dramatic goals to take Atlantic Station’s retail core to a new level. Currently, we’re talking to both regional and national retailers, and we expect to announce exciting new tenants early next year,” Uttenhove tells GlobeSt.com. “Our targeted tenants will respond well with the market and complement existing retailers, especially those in the fast fashion category.”

I think that area around Piedmont/Cheshire Bridge is about to blow up with dense residential and more walkable retail. It won't be recognizable in 5-10 years.

This looks like some of the adaptive re-use projects I've seen in San Francisco.
Looks like Atlanta is growing up.

I personally would rather Atlantic Station remain close to what it already is so that a retail center can develop in the Midtown core for more "exciting " tenants.

I honestly think it's time to give up with Midtown being a "mid to high end retail destination". You have Atlantic Station to the west and PCM to the east for shopping options. Even the Midtown city planners seem to have given up with the Midtown Mile with the way these developments are going. Now they seem to be looking towards it being a mixed used residential and office center vs. a touristy retail destination.

As population density increases in the heart of Midtown, I believe there will eventually be a very real demand for shops accessible by foot. The problem currently is that they are charging an arm and a leg for rent. Therefore, they are sitting empty. The Peachtree and Juniper presence of 12th & Midtown is embarrassing now that CB2 is out. They should seriously reevaluate their approach there.

Agreed. 12th & Midtown has been horrible at leasing tenants. The Juniper side of the 1065 building has been empty since the place opened.

The retail that exists in those places is hardly so exhaustive as to prevent any future retail from being developed in the area. As intown Atlanta and Midtown in particular continue to grow, retail will grow as well as we have already seen. The only question is where and what form the retail takes.

Midtown lacks anywhere with enough concentration of retail to attract and sustain anything other than restos and services. Colony Square is likely the best opportunity the change that reality in the near term.

If you were a retailer, would you choose to open up shop there?

Some progress for the proposed 18-story Hampton Inn at 1231 W.Peachtree in Midtown. They filed today for a permit to demolish the existing 1-story building.

Streetcar expansion plan.

The Atlanta City Council has approved a new Streetcar System Plan, which includes five crosstown routes in addition to 22 miles of streetcar service along the Beltline. All totaled, the plan consists of a 50-plus mile streetcar system throughout the city. The document will serve as a framework for a potential Fulton County referendum in 2016 seeking approval from voters to impose an additional penny or fractional penny sales tax to fund transportation projects. Having the plan in place also enables the city to apply for large scale federal transportation funding.

Sure why not? There is a decent amount of foot traffic and a lot of vehicle traffic. Einsteins and Joe's across Juniper seem to do very well. I always thought that a billiards hall or a place with some games would do pretty well in this location.

I agree. I hope it extends down Cheshire Bridge a good distance as well.

Einsteins and Joe's do well, and if we'd ever clear the dilapidated empty houses between those two places and develop that land, along with opening retail in the back of Loews, that could be a nice little area, especially when the next phase of 12th and Midtown on 12th gets built.
