If there is going to be a hotel in this development that means there will be a parkade too. I would think.

^ There is no way you could have a class A office building, condos and a hotel without a parkade. I'd take it as a given.

As part of the Development RFP the number of spaces currently available in the surface lot must be replaced in a parking structure. I have been told around 300 - 400 spaces.

^ That sounds like more than the number of spots that currently exist in the lot SW of the MTS Centre, no? I actually wouldn't mind it if they built a really big parkade. It would ease the pressure that was created when the Hydro Building opened up, and maybe provide a little less incentive for property owners to (find a way around city bylaws in order to demolish their buildings and) create new parking lots.

Around 200 or so spots in the current lot. Personally I'd rather see more spots eliminated downtown. The pricing of parking will adjust to an equilibrium with the demand and people who previous could afford to park and can no longer will now be taking the bus.

Yes, but I heard the garage is in the area of 400 stalls.

Wouldnt it make sense for True North's hotel to be one that can house NHL business? If I recall, the NHL contract requires it to be a Starwood of at least 4 stars and barring a 4-star Starwood, the best 4-Star+ hotel available.

The teams are still housed in the Fairmont, are they not? Would make sense to get that business in a TN development...

A 4 star hotel is being proposed for TN Square. We just don't know who it is.

The people who will only drive downtown are the same ones who will do anything to avoid it anyways. Screw them, do something for the people who spend most (if not all) their time there. If we keep treating our downtown as a place to commute that's what it will become... Or has become, either way.

Someone posted a good thought recently. The decline of downtown Winnipeg has taken 50+ years to get to this point. It'll take another 50 to get back to something good.

There's a few generations of people that have known nothing but shit downtown, including myself. I love coming downtown. It takes time, but I think downtown is slowly moving in the right direction. Looking at some of the photos in the Historical Winnipeg Thread, downtown looks like a completely different continent. Never mind city.

By that logic we should knock down a few more buildings and put up some more parking lots. Parking will then get cheaper and people will start flooding downtown.

Or you could realize that daytime parking rates are 99% based on the demand by downtown workforce. Who won't stop going downtown, cause you know, that's where they work. Also actually enforce parking limits on downtown streets to stop meter feeders (which is cheaper than parking at many lots). That would help free up spaces for downtown visitors. Seriously don't know why they don't go with a license plate system (which I've seen at private lots) and once your 2 hours are up you can't re-pay for that same license plate. I've heard of so many people who work downtown and just street park and go outside every couple hours to "feed the meter". I know you're technically not allowed to do that but I've never heard of anyone ever getting a ticket for re-metering.

We have the highest per cap of people who work downtown in our city or on the top 5 been a while since seen that stat think viking posted that few yrs back... But if we're going to increase residential options for us need to be made for our parking needs as well

There are approx 32,000 parking spots in downtown Winnipeg. I'm sure one can always find a spot if they ditch the 7-11 drive up to the front door parking mentality and walk a block or 2 to their destination.

Winnipeg Parking Authority has LPR already, but I'm not sure why it's not used. I spoke with Colin Stewart (PM at Parking) a while back about graduated fines and other things and he said that some of the WPA's authority is handcuffed by the summary conviction act, so that might have something to do with it...
