This is the same argument used time immemorial whenever a cash cow for the privileged few is challenged to change for the greater good: our business may not be good for the greater society, but if I threaten job cuts everyone will fall into line and do as I want. Of course if such circular logic is allowed to continue then those surface lots will remain surface lots forever. The people owning those lots and threatening the end of jobs if they don't get to keep them going indefinitely are owners who have no intention to develop them - otherwise they would have by now. They cost nothing to maintain, and the cash they produce for their owners just keeps rolling in to them year after year for no effort outside of paying the property taxes.

I can't believe they tore down that beautiful house.

London is renowned for it's yellow brick house, it's a special architectural style that is very unique to London.

This is 100% the city's fault. The city should update it's heritage inventory so that these buildings can be preserved and it also helps developers who know what they can and cannot do.

Vancouver allowed complete destruction of nearly all it's downtown homes and now the area is home to 100,000 people but literally only about 20 houses.

London does not need this kind of development and considering there are so many empty parking lots or incredibly ugly buildings they could tear down instead, this is an abomination. Again thou, it is the city's fault. The least the city could have done was demand that the old house be incorporated into the building's streetscape or moved the building to another location.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrr................ the city could become forward thinking, and instead of addressing each fucking house as it's slated to be axed, start looking at which need to be around for the future, right now?

The ass backwards approach of "it's coming down, lets start bitching" is the worst thing about forward progress for development. I'm not saying they weren't nice houses, but, what I will say is that before this, not a single person gave a fuck. It's all reactionary. Because of that, I have not a single fuck to be shared to those people who are complaining.

I used to live near Dundas and Highbury, right by Mc's and Kelloggs (withing eye distance of both go figure), and if they came to my area and said "we need your house and others to do this", go for it... If I felt that the house was of significant importance, the second I would have heard of ANY change, I'd throw any and all used toilet paper on those planners and stop it. Even before any changes were presented, or talked about... I am very involved with my neighbourhood and its development.

People need to start being forward thinking, not sitting on their hands and going "they tok er' jerbs" attitude.

According to Wikipedia this proposal has been approved. Can't find any hard support though.

But while searching I did come across a downtown design manual. Some cool stuff in there.

Haven't been through that part of downtown in a while, but I just saw a video of the Talbot houses being demolished. Since it's Tricar it's probably safe to say this is officially moving forward.

Video: http://iconosquare.com/p/1101515905802333197_10609762

Mixed feelings, but I'm pretty happy.

A little sad to see them gone, with that said I hope Tricar starts digging immediately. I would hate to see this now be an empty parking lot for a year.

Yep, drove by there today and the crew was working away bringing those buildings down. I think Tricar has a pretty good track record of proposing and then building projects. We can't say that for all these companies, but for Tricar I am confident we will see action right away.

They are demolishing the last building (iConect) on the site and it appears that there is more equipment than just demolition. I'm not a construction expert, but it looks like they are preparing the site to build the tower. So maybe out of all these proposals, this Tricar tower will be the first to go up.

I will have to make a point to drive by this weekend and take a look.

It seems like of all the currently proposals and based on past history this will be build quickly. Tricar has the cash and experience to show they do not tend to mess around once things are approved.

Looks like this lost a floor, proposal was 30 stories and now is 29. If you look at the renders the one linked about has one less floor on the "base".

Hope is stays over 300ft and is taller than the renaissance

I drove by the site on Thursday night and no question this is progressing quickly. The have a picture of the rendering on the fence surrounding the site, plenty of machines and looked to be a driller of some kind.

Drove by the construction site today and Tricar has a new billboard displaying a slightly different design of the tower. It has a lot of blue glass and it is named the Azure. I think it looks pretty good. At least it will stand out in our city of bland concrete

Yeah still looks pretty good, better than the renaissance buildings...which for concrete look pretty good I think.

Interested to hear what the new height is, it is one story higher than renaissance buildings which are 93m/306ft so maybe even though it technically lost a floor based on the initial 30 floor / 315ft it will still be the same height?

The 29-storey condo tower will be called Azure

Another sleek blue tower rising in downtown London will be true to its name.

The 29-storey condo tower will be called Azure — Italian for blue.

Developer Tricar Group held a groundbreaking Tuesday for the highrise at Talbot and Dufferin streets.

Tricar announced the new building will include a public art project with funding up to $250,000, in partnership with the city of London.

Tricar sponsored a similar project on its Renaissance I tower, a sculpture of a blue heron by London artist Ted Goodden.

Tricar vice-president Adam Carapella said he’s confident the condo market in downtown London is strong. He said the 200 units in the company’s Renaissance II tower a couple of blocks south sold out quickly.

“We do see the demand, and nothing else has been built since that project was completed in 2013.”

Unlike the Toronto market where many condo units are bought by investors who rent them out, Carapella anticipates about 90 per cent of the units in the new building will be owner-occupied.

In September, city council approved the demolition of three historic buildings on the site to make way for the development.

Speaking at the groundbreaking, Mayor Matt Brown said projects such as the Azure condos are important to the city plan for higher density and more efficient transit in the core.

Downtown London is less than one per cent of London’s land mass but generates five per cent of tax assessment, he said.
