As a Chicagoan I'm looking at these construction pics thinking this is an inelegant mess. But as a fan of steel construction I'm like

Forgive me if this has been discussed in this or the other Hudson Yards threads, but to those who may know, are they using domestic steel in this tower and the larger development? If so, what steel company did the fabrication?

^ Here's a pic I snapped a few days ago on Route 80 eastbound near Parsippany on its way to NYC, presumably to this site (or possibly some other steel construction site like 3WTC or 227 W 57th).

Yeah, pieces of these towers are coming together from various places. It's almost like those animated videos they show where the towers assemble themselves out of thin air. The Empire must rise by any means necessary.

Incredible. I have never seen any wide load hang over the trailer that far. It looks like it would make it tip over. Very interesting about how many suppliers there are. I'm sure that the U.S. steel production capacity could have met that demand some 30 years ago but with closures and consolidations we have to shop from around the world. Can't help but think we'd even have the ability to meet war production on the level we saw in the Second World War with the diminished capacity we see these days. Gloomy rant over.

Developers land $5 billion loan for 30 Hudson Yards, mall on far West Side

Wells Fargo will purchase 500,000 square feet at 30 Hudson Yards, space that it plans to occupy, according to Related and Oxford. Time Warner, and investment firm KKR, have also purchased office space in the 80-story tower. Time Warner also announced Friday that it closed on its deal to take 1.3 million square feet for its new corporate offices and broadcast studio space. Related and Oxford, along with the three office tenants, together invested about $2.2 billion of equity in 30 Hudson Yards.

Recently, Related secured $1.3 billion in financing for neighboring 15 Hudson Yards, the site’s first residential tower.

“These transactions represent an inflection point for Hudson Yards and the continued transformation of the West Side,” said Jeff Blau, Related CEO.

i dk what being a chicagoan has to do with anything, but as for inelegant, thats because its u/c -- its going to take a few years for elegant to come out of this massive and massively complicated development.

I agree completely!

Look at the sheer number of cranes!

Add that number to downtown and the other areas throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn and I honestly didn't know that NYC had THAT many cranes in existence!

I really like the design I just meant that Chicago tends to value very pragmatic architecture and I wouldn't describe what I'm seeing, this nest of steel beams needed because of a floating and shifting core as pragmatic.
