The 2015 Downtown St. John's Christmas Parade

Sadly this is pretty normal for Halifax (and parts of Toronto, and probably Montreal and Ottawa etc. as well). The inner city has the highest land values and most desirable properties, but also most of the historic architecture. Planning theory over the last couple decades has discouraged infill/redevelopment in "stable" residential areas in older cities, and Halifax in particular has a history of redeveloping the same 50 hectares or so over and over and over again, rather than expanding the downtown outwards into the "neighbourhoods". The result is that a lot of nice buildings are lost over the years but also the really eclectic streetscape where you have a building from the 1790s, then one from the 1960s, then one from the 1890s, then one from 2014.

This is starting to change in practice - hopefully the loss of this building will be near the tail end of that era.

So lucky. We got a little sprinkling around my birthday and then nothing real since. It's seriously depressing. It's December! Where's the snow?

I thought this aerial photo of Halifax's western suburbs was kind of interesting. The area is a bit unusual in that it's mostly multi-unit buildings and towers but backs onto a wilderness area:

I've never seen those buildings before, are you sure this isn't a Russian city?
Have you guys been purposefully hiding that area of Halifax from this forum all this time?
