I'm not really surprised, sometimes you just want a quick grab and go and this location (Regis) does fit the bill. A quick grab and go is usually accompanied by impulse purchases, food retailers love that. Try a quick grab and go at Atlantic Superstore... not so easy.

Sobeys Extra
I guess I was wrong, Sobeys is not coming to Moncton first; it's coming to SJ next year. According to the Canadian Grocer website, a Sobeys Extra location is opening in Saint John next year. They said “There are more stores in the pipeline too, but those decisions will be made on a market by market basis”. So it's not coming here just yet, they also said they want to go where it makes sense that Sobeys would introduce an Extra store in a community where people are most likely to afford its high-end offerings and experience”. I don't know, but our area would've been ripe for this before SJ, IMHO.

The decision might have been an easier one to make in SJ. In Moncton on the other hand, Sobeys might still be trying to decide between expanding and refurbishing the Champlain Place store or building new elsewhere. The situation on Dieppe Blvd (with the newly acquired Co-op store) probably complicates things.

Smile Mapleton Road Gas Station Update.

In the foreground, you can see the current status of the new Irving/Circle K/Tim Horton's at the corner of Mapleton and Lady Ada.

In the background, you can see the status of the Ultramar/Country Style in Mapleton Crossing next to Princess Auto. I would not be surprised to see this business opening by the beginning of the year.

I wonder what's going to happen to all these gas stations when the real push towards a post carbon economy begins to take place in about 10-15 years time...........

Yeap - they started construction a few months ago at East Point Shopping. Will be over 50 thousand square feet, with the NB Liquor Marquee store next to it, and will feature a new design outside and move away from the brick entrance. Will be quite fitting for East Point as it's becoming quite the classy shopping atea.

Also - contrary to what you may believe - we're not all poor here in Greater Saint John. Of course this is... as you would say it "IMHO"

I never said anything about the poverty in SJ!? I'm quite fond of Saint John as a city, I have a no clue where you got this impression. All I said is that retailers usually come to Moncton first and we are ready for this concept especially in Dieppe because of several factors going on right now (Coop situation, Sobeys Champlain situation, Sobeys Regis street situation and so on), it's the Sobeys article that said something about ''high spenders''. There's probably more millionaires in the SJ area than here, there is alot of old money in Saint John and there's poverty issues everywhere in this province.

Post carbon economy. Will believe it when I see it. IF it even begins to take place, and that's the key word BEGINS, I think the gas stations are safe for at least the next 50 years.

I'm happy most people in this world do not think the same way you do. It's happening and it's going to happen much quicker than you could ever imagine.

I don't want to hijack this thread. I just want to say that I would be more than happy to see things change Mattyyy. BUT, all I heard on the news this morning about the new events centre was where were people going to be able to park their cars/SUV's. Really? Or will everyone be taking their hybrid/electric cars or public transit? Will the building be covered in solar panels? Talk is cheap and doesn't involve changing your life style. I have ten bucks that says a new gas station will be built down by the new centre though.

I somehow doubt we'll be done with gas stations within 10-15 years. 25-50 years, maybe; but not 10-15.

Regardless, even if the gas guzzlers are changed over to electron buzzers, we'll still need service stations. Travellers will want handy rest stops with services, and the vehicles will still need to be serviced as well, whether they are gasoline, diesel, electric, natural gas or however powered.

Maybe in another decade we'll see a contraction as gas companies consolidate and convert their supplies; but I don't see the need ever disappearing completely.

I generally agree with this time frame.

What I meant by what I said is that the status quo will be maintained for about 10-15 years, but by that time you might begin to see an impact from the introduction of efficient affordable electric vehicles and hydrogen powered vehicles to the system.

Traditional internal combustion vehicles will still be around for 25-40 years, especially for commercial vehicles and for inter-city travel, but will become less and less important with time.

Service stations will still survive, especially as rest stops and potentially as hydrogen refueling and rapid charging stations, but they may be less numerous in the future.

In any event, I am constantly amazed (and appalled) by the number of gas stations in the metro area. They're everywhere!!

Unless you run out of gas. Then they're a long walk away.

Well if you think about it, this is basically the rebound from the last big Gas Station expansion.

In the 80's or so, gas stations were everywhere; but they weren't like they are today. They were full service gas stations with garages, and often with restaurants. Then automation took off, and full service turned to self service, and the gas companies consolidated, leading to a lot of those garage stations closing up. You can still find the remnants of these all over the place; boarded up buildings on old highways, mom and pop garages seemingly in the middle of nowhere, often they are now used car dealers, etc...

Now we're seeing the new version of gas stations expanding, with all but automatic pumps, and storefronts that are often little more than kiosks; or stores that are basically a full fast food restaurant with a kiosk tacked on.

When the gas-surge starts dying down, we'll probably see these stations condensing again as well. This time they'll probably just take the tanks out and become full restaurants (when they have the tie-in), or they'll just fold up and disappear (when they're basically just pumps and a kiosk).

At least when they disappear they won't leave much more than an empty lot this time.

To complete the "gas station" portion of this thread, the new Ultramar at Mapleton Crossing will apparently open on December 18th.

It apparently will have the biggest "Corner Store" in the metro area, and will be the first Ultramar location in Atlantic Canada to have a "Transit Cafe".

The north side of the Mapelton Crossing development is now complete. The owner (Jeff McManaman) states that he is in ongoing discussions with potential tenants for the south side of the development. What this means, I have no idea.

Sounds like he might be taking a hands on approach to his development, and we may see businesses come in that residents have been asking for. For a while now instead of the same ol' same ol'..

South Street Burger Co. is still looking for franchisees in NB from what I've heard hopefully someone steps forth, and we get a franchise or 2 in the Greater Moncton area.

Milestone's restaurant is also actively looking for a Moncton franchisee.

Milestone's is a lot like Moxie's. I think Mapleton Crossing would be an ideal location for them.

Of course, if IKEA ever rolls out their pick-up point stores to the east coast, I think Mapleton Crossing would be perfect for them too, but this is probably wishful thinking.

Wasn't there talks of potentially seeing a Kelsey's, and also a new Swiss Chalet (Potentially a Swiss Chalet/Harvey's) as well?

Either way If I had the kind of Money needed I'd try my hand at investing into these type of franchises.
