I know LAX is behind in the times with the moving walkways and i think some terminals should have them in some cases but I never understood the obsession.

In all my trips to other airports, the people that actually walk the distance move considerably faster than those who just stand on the moving walkways. I never used the airport moving walkways. Even when im in vegas, the moving walkways between some of the casinos I avoid, I rather walk. Ill use those when Im 70.

The thing with LAX is that most of the distances ( from the actual plane to the street loop) isn't that long at all and the baggage claims being near the entrances makes the walk easier..... other than TBIT and maybe connecting between the terminals, Moving Walkways are just an added bonus but not a necessity as of right now.

I mean think about it, you sit on the plane for a few hours and then don't want to have to walk a short distance? and people wonder why their waist lines are expanding and blood pressure and Sugar levels are sky high ! that way of thinking leads you to the obese Walmart family clan that we see roaming in packs in motorized wheelchair/shopping carts. LAZYNESS KILLS PEOPLE.

Ding, ding, ding.

Most of the airport terminals I've passed through didn't have any moving walkways, if my memory is as good as I think it is. This whole notion that LAX isn't "modern" because of a dearth of such is nonsense. Dingy terminals and lack of an automated people mover? Sure.

The info so far just says Delta has agreed in principal to vacate T5 after T3 is rebuilt, and AA will trade T6 and Eagle gates for T5. That puts the timing of the move sometime after 2022 because LAWA won't begin T3 renovation until the TBIT Mid Field North Concourse is done.

So to answer your question... this is just my own speculations:

1. TBIT MFC North construction begin in 2016.
2. Existing T3 tenants will move to TBIT MFC North around 2019~2020 when it opens.
3. T3 tear down begin in 2020.
4. T3 and connector to T2 and TBIT construction should be done by 2022.
5. Delta will begin to move to new T3 by summer 2022.
6. AA will vacate T6 around the same time and move to consolidate T4, T5, and TBIT.
7. APM opens in 2023.
8. TBIT MFC South construction will begin in 2023?
9. CTA garage tear down in 2024?
10. CTA check in hall construction in 2025? And opens in ???
Right, AA will vacant T3 and then DL will move its all operations to T2/T3 right after Summer 2022. It will take a while.

After that, AA will adds new domestic & international routes, as well as Caribbean, The Bahamas, and Central America.

Once the A321neo will delivered in a few years later. It will be replacing the 757-200 aircraft. When they deployed the A321neo to Hawaii & Caribbean flights.

Almost nobody boards an airplane without carrying something, a laptop in a bag if nothing more. Moving walkways make it marginally easier and less tiring to get to your gate and, no, I don't walk on moving walkways. I just stand. And if you think the distances at LAX are so manageable, I suggest you take the hike between security and the far end of Terminal 8 one of these days.

LAX doesn't have them, but used to. SFO has them. Denver has them. Don't know about Atlanta or O'Hare. The old Dallas Love Field had the first ones in the world in the late 1950s.

They make using an airport marginally less unpleasant. They would make LAX marginally less of a dump.

Oh I'm sorry, didn't mean to offend you, just a difference of opinion. Moving walkways don't make or break airports, A lot of the worlds airports actually don't have them everywhere, only for long corridors which as of right now, other than TBIT and future TBIT expansion, LAX does not have. Most of our terminal gates are 100-400 feet from the street loop, not far at all.

You arrive to the airport in a car/cab/uber, you should want to walk to the gate since you're going to be sitting for a few hours.....

You sit on a plane for a few hours, you should want to stretch out walk once you arrive to the gate...

I don't doubt that you just stand on the moving walkways, what I'm saying is while you're standing there, people like me rather walk, speeding past you to get out of the airport asap, by the time I'm walking out the gate past security and to the train or car or cab, you're still standing on the moving walkway because its convenient but my god its so slow.

And ive used gate 8 a couple of times for small flights and I love walking it and being able to stretch out.

To put it in a better perspective, If people are complaining about lugging a carry on bag through a short corridor, I can only imagine how people manage to walk around theme parks with back packs and kids....or students at UCLA ( with its hilly terrain) and USC with backpacks, laptops and books...... and people who are currently shopping in this countries mega malls who don't have moving walk ways but somehow seem to manage to carry 8 bags, a kid and cellphone to the ear.

Moving walkways wont make LAX less of a dump, I actually don't think its a dump, the problem is there is no cohesion with the terminals, they are all designed differently with different standards. I would have required that every terminal be torn down one by one to be more cohesive with the NEW TBIT.

The Main problem is the accessibility, LAX is one of the only airports in the country that is car oriented. once that problem is fixed with transit and other things, and hopefully some serious redesign with the terminals, LAX wont be that bad at all. But saying that Moving walkways are necessary to make it compete with other airports isn't entirely accurate.

I think LAX can survive without moving walkways. The main focus needs to be deconstruction, construction and modernization.

I hate that LAX is allowing airlines to simply paint and remodel some of their terminals when they need to be completely torn down and rebuilt with bigger, open air designs....... in a way mimicking Tom Bradley terminal with its interior and exterior design.

Once the modernization is complete, I don't think all terminals will need Moving walkways since honestly the gates aren't that far from the terminal entrance, but with Tom Bradley getting bigger, that terminal may need a few for our international travelers.

I hardly ever see more than a handful of people using these moving walkways at airports when I travel, most people just walk because they are slow.

Turkey or moving walkways? Which sounds better right now?

Happy Thanksgiving!

^ Nope. All we know is that Gensler was commissioned for the design.

Thanks. originally it was to match TBIT, is it true that they've dropped that idea to save money?

Here is a presentation that was given on June 18th to the Board of Airport Commissioners regarding the overall project:

^ Good stuff. Thanks. What happened to the planned people mover between the two concourses?

Design-wise, the 'wave' option would look great if the roof followed a single contour with skylights here and there. But the alternation between wavy and flat just makes it look too busy and cluttered.

I like both but you're right Quixote, the wave looks busier than I expected. But I like it already LOL.

If LAX wanted to have a "story/Hollywood style design", would be cool to have the next TBIT expansions copy the Wave design, And bulldoze all the other terminals and have them rebuilt in the Reef design, represents LA to the fullest. Great way to say "Welcome to LA".

I HATE that they didn't go with the bridge idea. That with the Theme building would have made LAX a true landmark on its own.

Is there a plan in the future to tear down the old Block/Boxy TBIT ? no upgrades in the world can save that 70s style terminal.

I'm not saddened about the skybridge, but I wish that Fentress woul'dve drawn more inspiration from the Theme Building for the terminal architecture itself.

For those who might not notice, 'wave' replaced 'reef' as the preferred concept. This excites and worries me at the same time. If given a choice between the two alternatives as presented, I'd probably select the reef concept only because there's very little margin for error when it comes to minimalist design. But with some refinement, the wave concept has the potential to be much more impressive. They just need to figure out a way to cut back on the number of columns and rethink the contour of the roof.
