London-based McArthurGlen’s only award at the MAPIC expo, which was attended by more than 8,400 people, was for its shopping centre in Richmond near Vancouver International Airport.
MAPIC provided no explanation for why the centre merited being named the best outlet centre in the world but Vancouverites have been voting with their feet for how much they like the centre.
About 160,000 people flocked to the centre during its first four days, which was the busiest for any opening four days in McArthurGlen history. The company operates 20 other malls in Europe.
It also only took a mere three months for the centre to welcome its millionth customer .
The centre’s manager, Robert Thurlow, told Business in Vancouver at the time that traffic was about 66% higher than anticipated.
Saw this at the Grandview Real Canadian Superstore over the weekend.
I think there were 4 very large spaces allocated to it.
Compare with Save-on-Foods Online Store just up the block.

Seems odd since it's not even complete yet and has yet to add a second phase. McArthurGlen's European Outlet Centres are far more more complete in terms of selection and brands, ours will get there but it's certainly has a ways to go. I'd be interested in the criteria for their selection process or is this simply and industry promoting itself.
when i went there on my visit back in october, I was surprised by how many empty stores there were, not really a good shopping place yet. There was a lot of empty restaurants, one seemed to be a pop up place featuriong a variety of what seemed to be food truck brands in the city
the places they did have were nice, like the coach and polo and if you convert prices to the US for comparison things worked out cheaper for the things i was looking at anyway
Target on the other hand... That spot has been sitting vacant for months and Ivanhoe Cambridge is bound to want to get something in there soon to keep from leaking more cash on the empty space. If no one moves in soon (and I would have expected to hear something by now) then a reno / redevelopment of some sort seems likely.

I was at the outlet last Thursday afternoon (first time) It seemed like most spaces were filled although I was talking with my firmed and not overly focused on assessing the retail lol. Overall it felt like a really nice, especially the section with the coffee place in the middle. The one funny thing and my friend also commented on it was how it's so quaint and peaceful until a plane flies literally over your head. Holly shit It's loud!!
They seem to be setting up for renovations to the former Target space at Coquitlam Centre. There are no WalMart signs or anything up yet advising when it is actually going to be opening.
Oh look, Spirit Halloween was in the lower Target floor briefly, and now Calendar Club is in there briefly. It so does not look like anyone is lined up to take over the whole space for a long term lease.
It will take time for any new tenant to 'design' the space and renovate to suit their needs.. this is not the same as a tenant moving into a west end apartment, these things take time. They might as well generate some income until something else happens.

will be nice when its got more shopping options
With a second one of these things opening in Tsawwassen in short order that may be poor timing. I would have expected these to go into obscure out of the way location, not next to major transportation hubs like the airport or ferries to Vancouver Island.
That's part of the business plan - to attract travellers. As a destination shopping centre, a large part of their customer base is visitors from other areas - the same way that Canadians frequent US outlet malls when they travel.

I'm guessing rent should be relatively low over there as well, since this is land that cannot really be used for direct airport operations. It's a bonus for YVR to even be making a revenue out of it. Better an outlet mall than a piece of wild grass land for birds to poop on.

Interestingly, when you google Fendi Vancouver, it shows up as 1005 Alberni, where the Tiffany store is currently at.
