Ice District is befitting today.

The one thing I don't miss about Edmonton is how winter roads look like something out of a muddy frontier-town era cliche.

Not so bad when you engage 4x4.

Watching 2x4 rear wheel drive vehicles is mildly entertaining.

But I heard Riomaggiore Italy has no roads like this in February

^ Use enough salt to sterilize the North Saskatchewan river when it runs off?

I seem to remember Calgary using a non-salt mix of some sort that was the bees knees at the time.

Edmonton just stupidly oversands like... drunken.... sand dumping guys...

It's appalling and grotesque.

The City needs to use what is used on the Henday. They use some type of ice melting agent that melts snow/ice even when temperatures are below -15C. They don't use much if any sand.

I agree, we put down way too much sand and salt. It just looks disgusting. It doesn't work for traction, it's terrible to walk on.

We use to much sand and rock chips. Imo...more of the new generation salt is required.

Using salt brines, which is any liquid salt mixture, before anticipated snowfall was discovered to be more effective than using solid rock salt.

Brines have the same melting characteristics of solid rock salt, but since it is applied in liquid form, the salt can begin to work immediately. The brines are also more effective in lower temperatures.

The use of brines is known as anti-icing or pre-wetting measures.

Using salt brines proves not only to be more effective on roads, but it is also cost effective. It takes four times less salt to prevent ice accumulation than to remove ice after it has formed.

There's just one wee problem with brine:

Worse than salt, brine sprayed on roads will munch your car to pieces

Shape of things to come

As the business of architecture consolidates, it becomes harder to create beautiful, challenging buildings. But thanks to one unorthodox architect, Edmonton is opening its doors to a brighter future

There is a symphony of movement around me. A black steel running track curves through the air above my head. Through a glass wall to the left, teenage boys are shooting hoops on a purple basketball court; to the right, a sculptural hunk of drywall points upward to a gym, where three women are sweating on exercise bikes.

This building – a massive multipurpose community centre and library – is a giant crystal full of moments like this, juxtaposing views, forms and experiences. It’s an architect’s dream brought vigorously to life. It belongs in some design-savvy Northern European city.
Wow, that's a few Edmonton articles in the past few days in the Globe and Mail, they must have finally found us on the map.

The brine is not a horrible idea, but to preemptively brine 1,000+ KM of streets would be an insane task.

I wonder if there is a bleached sand that is less dark-brown mud that could be used. Maybe buy a few beaches from Cuba and use that sand

Maritime areas such as the eastern seaboard are more susceptible to corrosion than we are here given their high humidity. As I type this winter has arrived and my skin is falling off. AFAIC brine away!|
Sand/gravel looks like crap, isn't very effective, is expensive to clean up in the spring, damages road markings, and creates dust. Not to mention the windshields that need replacement every 18 months. Hate it.

I'm pro-brine pro-ice melting agent or whatever we can use to at least MELT the snow/ice. Chipped paint and cracked windows are just as bad as corrosion so its a lose-lose situation.

DECL had a pre-app meeting with the Jasper and 108st/El Mirador development group last night. Excellent partners, ie. John Day, Pangman, MacLab. 4 slim towers, ~6000sqft floor plates, units in the 500-750sqft, a mix of 1 and 2bdrm, considerable retail on the main floor along Jasper and 108st. Ideally they want to do the SW tower first along Jasper, followed by the other tower on Jasper and will do the entire parkade for the first 2 towers together. Phase 2 will be the 2 north towers. They are looking at working with the city to remove the awkward LRT entrance along Jasper and incorporate it into the tower similar to Williams Engineering or Cambridge Lofts. They want to get going on this by fall 2016.
