So you know the ugliness of that part of town then. Notice any of the DIY renovations inside any of those shops? 2 X 4 reception desks, holes in ceilings with pipes exposed and random walls.

Oh yes, these places had "limited budget" written all over them.

Did I post this already? I forget, but if I did it's ugly enough to deserve posting again.

That's in Regina, isn't it? That part of Regina rhymes with bacon drapes.

More than the name Regina itself?

Makes sense that such ugliness comes from MIGS' homeland. Then again it looks positively Edmontonian to me.

It wouldn't be the worst looking building if they didn't decide that mustard and salmon was somehow okay.

This reminded me of something that I assume has been posted by someone before, the first large structure anyone travelling up the west coast sees when entering Canada. So horrible.

I don't know about that. The faux cornices, columns and stone are pretty awful too. So's the shape. So are the windows and the blue awnings. Basically everything about it.

Is it meant to remind travellers from California of their fake Mediteranean villas?

Additions to houses can sometimes make for some pretty ugly buildings. Here's one from my parent's neighbourhood that has always bugged me. The extra space above the garage makes it look like an uglier version of the Amittyville Horror house.

It's a seniors home. Too bad too because it was a reasonable 1950s light industrial warehouse which could have been made pretty cool.

Speaking of terrible house infill. I'm sure I've posted this one before on Princess Street in Regina. As far as contextual insensitivity goes it might be in its own class. Even The Rooms in St. John's doesn't seem so out of scale in comparison to this. Apparently this even violates the height restriction for the zone, but the city has allowed it to exist.

If a witch doesn't live there I would be shocked.

Here's another strange one.

Edit: Just saw the one HIMS posted and this is very similar.

Not sure which would be a worse retirement home, that or les Residences Soleil? It looks like they literally just built a warehouse to store old people in then tacked on some bright colours to make it look 'happy'.

Soleil hands down. The diverse urban fabric with the Regina option (Robin's Donut about 2.5 blocks and the Cornwall Centre Shopping Mall within four blocks) makes the one in Regina way better to live in.

Valois Shopping Centre, Pointe Claire (QC)

montrealgazette; jottingalong.

In that last shot above, you can see the remnants of the Dominon signage (Supermarket store logo with that funny looking D)

This angle features the famous Quebec concrete blocks:

To add insult to injury they also refused to have a sidewalk in front of it, so you're walking down the street and suddenly the sidewalk is replaced with coarse gravel. (Or at least that's what they had when I visited. It seems so bizarre I hope it was a temporary thing.)
