Exactly. Again many people are coming from outside downtown that don't normally go downtown. They will head to the mall before the game do some shopping and then walk to the arena.

I have loved Michael Z's idea for the Rossdale plan for quite some time. But it needs to be part of a catalyst development to have some shops/services/residential down there as well. Problem with Edmonton right now is all the effort is on Quarters, Blatchford, even Fort Road, the City is tapped out. We have a lot of brownfield sites unfortunately.

Geothermal is absolutely viable in single family homes... There are quite a few ground source heat pumps going in new installations, in fact s lot of builders offer them as an upgrade. My neighbour has a ground source heat pump that he installed as a retrofit in a house similar to mine

In the Rossdale case though, you're talking about raising the temperature of a considerable amount of water. Assuming that hot water from the ground is not available and you'd require a mechanical method of heating the water through the use of a hear pump and in-ground evaporator loop, not sure what kind of system you'd need to generate the necessary BTU's

Agreed though.. This ain't happening any time soon

Landmark's land north of Energy Square is for sale, ~36,500sqft, ie. 1 big tower or 2 similar to fox/icon idea. I wonder if Langham will pick that up and do 2 more twins.

I'd love to see a 5-6 storey podium with a single larger residential tower in the middle of say 30 storeys.

it's not the size that makes geothermal viable or not, it's the balance between heating and cooling loads. Even for a normal house you would need a expensive and very large geothermal field if you're trying to cover all the heating load. Most of the geothermal projects I've seen have sized the geothermal field to the cooling load so they're using the cool ground to cool in the summer, and to heat in the spring and fall, but heat with gas most of the winter.

Would make no sense for a facility that's heating a lot year round.

^ that's really only if you have thermal activity close to the surface. For the most part, ground below the frost line stays a constant temperature throughout the year. Most residential won't use a field, but a bore hole that uses the ground as a heat sink. Through the thermodyamic prinicples of a refrigeration cycle, heat is removed from the ground in the winter and heat is added to the ground in the summer to provide winter heating and summer cooling respectively, typically using a heat pump

In places like Iceland you stick a straw in the ground and hot water comes out.. But places like that are few & far between

Michael Zabinski wants to turn the vacant historic building into an oasis brimming with life. He came up with the proposal for his graduate thesis at Dalhousie University.

Two gondolas operated by ETS would be cool... One from 105th and sask drive...the other from 104th and 99ave...both ending at rossdale. Wonder how cost effective though...and maitenance issues in our climate. Would be great for tourists and residents. There's quite a few examples in South America I think...

Not too sold on the gondola but I do think the baths idea may need to be expanded. Either conceptually or. . . prospectively.
