'Mr. Downtown L.A.' says dogs and playgrounds can transform downtown Edmonton
"Q: Edmonton is pinning a lot of its hopes for downtown revitalization on Rogers Place. Is it enough?
It’s a critical component. It’s multiple spokes on a wheel. It’s a catalytic project. You’re going to find out that it’s going to be an economic generator that’s going to drive heads into the beds of your hotels in the downtown. People that don’t normally come to downtown Edmonton are going to do it to come to events. When they’re doing that, they’re going to discover other things that they can do in downtown Edmonton and it’s going to change the world.
I think you guys have done exactly the right thing. We’ve had huge benefits from building our Staples Center back in ’99. It is a best practice that’s terrific.
Q: Both arenas feature, or will offer, entertainment districts. What is their impact?
People come to the arena and they start exploring the rest of the downtown."
