Not a true luffing jib as it is the mobile crane at the Kimpton hotel and will probably go soon.

In some places luffing jibs are essential, for example in London cranes cannot swing any load over any adjacent building so they will be seen on any central London construction.

Ryan, some of your best arial work. I do not have my drone with me this week and I was missing a review of the construction and then you came to the rescue. Great effort. By the way, the one of the front of Union Station did you launch from Wyncoop or from the Chestnut side and look back?

Thank you Lumos!

I launched from Wynkoop, across the street from the station. I don't have FPV so I fly blind and gotta keep tabs on it in the sky. The GoPro takes a photo every two seconds and I hope for the best! Luckily I had Ken spotting the ground scene for me, so I wouldn't land on top of someone. One day I'll upgrade....

That was an odd autocorrection, changed drone to drink.

I find that on the way out I can keep the drone in sight, but if I look away I often can not re-acquire and fly back from the map (the inspire 1 always draws a line from the craft back to the home point). So many times I don't see it again until it is in the overhead. The Go Pro is certainly delivering great image quality.

My dream drone, with the X5 camera. FPV would help me a lot, but I feel like I have some good skills built up from flying blind. They're all fun RC toys regardless!

Looking out the window and the signs are being installed on the dual Hyatts on 14th. They do seem to give the building a bit more life, which is nice.

Awesome pics Ryan, I think that's the most cranes that there ever has been in the Platte Valley. Man toys are a blast-wish I had one I'd take some pics of the two Klimpton cranes here in downtown Sac right next to the new Kings arena that just got recently topped out.

Confluence Park Improvements

Does any one know what is happening with Shoemaker Plaza since the floods last spring. They started in March but seem to have lost heart after the floods breached the barrier and have to been back since. We have lost the paths now on both sides of the river and have no ramps all since they removed the old ones. The project was due to be delivered in June 16

If you have a GoPro already, get a starter one, it's totally worth it! Endless fun taking photos from the sky!

That being said...

That was actually a very surprising vote, I figured for sure they would allow that historic designation to proceed. Good to know that council is not mindless and saw through this.

Hopefully this makes future hostile historic designation seekers think twice (probably not) whether they are truly trying to maintain a historic building, or just trying to block development/densification (which is what most of these filings are veiled under).

Denver gets a little less gritty, though ~70 acres of infill opportunity is about to drop in Denver's lap:

Union Pacific to close Burnham repair yard in Denver

Seems like this would be a perfect opportunity for the city to add a whole bunch of affordable housing that so many people have been clamoring for. Right next to light rail too. They'd need to do something about the street access though.

I worked at that shop for five years (my employer was actually GE Transportation Systems, not UP). And then I maintained a close relationship with the shop, visiting it often, while I worked at GE Power Systems in Montebello for four years, where we did a lot of work repairing traction motors for them. I get a bit sentimental every time I drive over it on 6th. Not only am I going to be sad to see it go, but the idea of it ceasing to exist actually freaks me out a little bit. I mean that shop has been there since the 1880s.

Nevertheless, I think this is an awesome infill opportunity. Back when there was a proposal to build a skyrise jail next to the shop (anybody remember that?) I got to fantasizing about the whole area being redeveloped. I used to get to work by taking the light rail to 8th and Osage and then illegally “trespassing” over to the shop. During the many hours spent standing around at that station waiting for a train, I would imagine a future in which that fence is taken down and a huge new development to the west is accessible from the light rail station.

This could be an excellent TOD opportunity – especially if it’s zoned right and well integrated with the light rail station. And there isn’t much in the way of residents in that area that might complain about what gets built in their proverbial backyards, with the exception of that low-income development to the east of the station. It’s pretty much all industrial to the west and south.

What? And create the next Montbello? No thank you. I want my urban neighborhoods to be filled with young, white, sexy hipsters.

It will be interesting to see who snaps this up. The southern portion of the yard would seem like a good near-city industrial location for wharehouses. But the northern portion would be a good extension of La Alma/Lincoln Park.

Ooh, I can't wait for all of the renderings that have lots of lensflare, transparent young hotties hanging out, and beamers parked out front!

Also, it'll be next to historic Kenny's house.
