Looks like the maintenance was over? The TBM is passed through the maintenance site and at Thompson Ave as of Nov 10th. Only 280m to go till breakthrough.

http://www.evergreenline.gov.bc.ca/documents/InformationSheets/151110_TunnelBoringMachine-Map.pdf

At this rate, the breakthrough should be around Dec 1st?

True, but they've only happened over the air gap when performing maintenance. We should be in the clear now..

Anybody know where Alice is headed after she is finished. Does she have enough life left in her to get from the Finning lands to Arbutus?

Unlikely -

It depends on who owns the TBM.
EGRT may have just leased it for use on the Evergreen Line.
(The TBM used on the Canada Line was leased and afterwards was sent off to a job in Russia)

Too bad a city did not buy one and then once done one job, they simply start the next.

Which city would buy it? Or do you mean TransLink? Why would they buy one when they don't have another tunnelling project funded and ready to go? And why would they want to spend the money on it in the first place, when they can just lease one for the time it's needed?

I am thinking cities like Vancouver, Toronto or Montreal.

Adding underground sections or new tunnels for roads would be easier if they owned the equipment. It would also be an incentive to keep building.

Each tunnel have different requirement though. For instance, a TBM built for SkyTrain construction would be too small for road and too big for sewer projects.

Also, I'm pretty sure Broadway would use smaller twin tunnels rather than the one used for Evergreen. Otherwise, the tunnel and stations have to be much deeper.

========================

TBM location map was updated today:
http://www.evergreenline.gov.bc.ca/documents/InformationSheets/151116_TunnelBoringMachine-Map.pdf

Only about 230m to go!

That doesn't work because the governmental entity (whether it be municipal, regional or provincial) does not do the work itself. It contracts out the work for big projects such as these, and the contractor would not want to be saddled with using someone else's equipment (which may have different specifications than they want to build).

The cost of the TBM is peanuts compared to everything else. It's really not worth the bother.

TBMs also have a very finite life to them, measured in kilometers.

There's a website for buying used TBMs that I stumbled upon once.
