The AUC is not by any remote means worthy of a Q league team. The seats are old, the capacity is smaller than it used to be, UNB got rid of general attendance in favor of assigned seats last year, the hallways are cramped, the dressing rooms are ridiculously tiny apart from the UNB one which they won't share, the parking lot is half gravel and a ton of views are obstructed.

The Willie/GH are great community rinks (2 surfaces each, great views, GH serves beer, one for each side of the river which is important with how deep the North/South divide is) but a Q League team was a distant dream when they were first discussed and built. I wouldn't say it was unreasonable given how terrible the community rinks would be if they had built a Q arena and left the York, Nasis, LBR and Coliseum for minor hockey.

Major Junior in Freddy is seriously at least 10 years away, unless someone decides to take the chance and try to move into the AUC.

There's a bit of stadium news for Halifax. The stadium study that was completed for the FIFA women's cup a couple of years ago is being revamped and city staff are asking council to approve more study of a proposal to build a 20,000+ seat facility in the Shannon Park area, in collaboration with Canada Lands.

I would guess that in a few months there will be actual study materials with maps and renderings of potential stadiums etc.

Spectator Roof, LED Lighting & Seating Progress – Construction is 60 per cent Complete

Officials from the City of Regina and PCL Construction provided an update on the spectator roof, lighting and seating for the Regina Revitalization Initiative Stadium Project, which is approximately 60 per cent complete.

“These key features show just how different our new stadium will be compared to the current facility. Spectators, performers and athletes will enjoy these features and our beautiful new stadium for generations,” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “It’s exciting to see the progress that has been made by PCL and the City team since ground was broken over 500 days ago.”

“A spectator roof and improved lighting and seating are essential features of our new stadium,” said Brent Sjoberg, Deputy City Manager & COO, executive lead for the Regina Revitalization Initiative. “PCL has teamed-up with world-class suppliers to deliver a modern and iconic multi-purpose facility for our community that everyone can be proud of.”

Substantial completion of the stadium is scheduled for August 31, 2016 with the first Rider game taking place in the new stadium in June 2017.

Spectator Roof – FabriTec (Dallas TX) – North America’s leading Design/Build tension fabric roof specialty contractor will begin installation of 130,800 square feet of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fabric roofing in the spring of 2016. The material is translucent, which will allow maximum daylight into the stadium and also provides shading.

Other notable FabriTec tensile membrane roofs include BC Place in Vancouver and Omnilife Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico and the London Olympic Stadium.

LED Lighting – Ephesus Lighting (Syracuse NY) – Approximately 400 LED fixtures with wireless control will illuminate the new stadium and provide an improved experience for athletes, performers and spectators with an industry leading glare control system. The LED lighting system will also be turned on and off with the flick of a switch. Ephesus fixtures typically provide energy savings of 75 per cent compared to traditional sports lighting. Regina’s new stadium will be the first in the Canadian Football League with LED lighting.

Other notable Ephesus lighting projects include University of Phoenix Stadium and US Bank Stadium in Minnesota.
Installation of the lighting fixtures will begin this fall. The LED lights will be turned on for the first time in the spring of 2016.

Sounds very similar to Le Bob in Gatineau (Hull), which is being torn down by the city in two years-ish. I'd wager it's the worst quality rink in the Q, although I haven't been to Val-d'Or, Rouyn-Noranda, or Baie-Comeau for comparison's sake.

That's a fair enough point, of the ones you listed only the LBR is really up to 21st-century standards for minor and community hockey.

I would probably agree. Given the Q's recent mandate on new arenas and moving into older arenas (See: Sherbrooke) I can't imagine they would allow a franchise to enter the Fredericton area without a new arena being built.

It looked like nothing would ever happen in Edmonton for a while too. Now that it's all fancy and under construction it's easy to forget there was, what, almost 6 years of debates and back and forth before this thing went ahead?

What Calgary will build won't look like what they proposed, but I bet *something* will get done. Eventually.

The owners need more skin in the game than the paltry $200 million they are offering. Considering how rich they are, that number should double if not triple.
