This is a good point about cruise control. I always use cruise control when it's not raining or snowing, but based on people's speed fluctuation it doesn't seem that many others are using it. I wonder why that is?

Then again my experience with American car brands is that their cruise control is not very exact and the speed can temporarily fluctuate by 10km/h in uphill and downhill. My own car can keep the speed in exact value and hence I always end up flying by others in an uphill and having everyone behind me in downhill. There is no consistency to people's speed!

while I could maybe see widening the Red Hill, what would the point be of widening the Linc? From my understanding it doesn't even congest during rush hours.

The Linc gets bad during rush hour, mostly from three sections, Linc/403, Linc/Upper James and Linc/Red Hill.

Pretty much every weekday I spend 10 or more minutes in congestion on the Linc to the 403 each morning. Personally I don't know if adding another lane on the Linc will help the 403/Linc congestion, it'll probably make it worst.

They really need to add another lane on the 403, make it four lanes to six lanes. I rather see money on the 403 and Red Hill instead of the Linc.

I wish that the federal government would give money to 4-lane Highways 11 and 17 through Northern Ontario, BC, NS and NL. It would be our economy as roads would be safer and travel and shipment times would be reduced for cross-country travel. I find that not enough progress has been made as far as having at least one decent highway across Canada.

I'd be curious to see how much of the traffic on the LINC/RHVP is long distance traffic, i.e. traveling from Highway 403 to the west to the QEW to the east.

Some updated information about the 407 East Extension in the eastern GTA. These pictures were taken on November 7, 2015

Some of the new signage has gone up on the 401. To my knowledge, this is the only new signage that has been erected for the highway:

The sign for the Lake Ridge Road interchange pre-dates almost all construction of the ramp itself.

Top coat asphalt has been applied to much of the future highway west of the Lake Ridge Road interchange. Lines were applied at some point earlier this week. Most of the highway is not this far advanced. These views are from just west of Sideline 14 in Pickering, and look east:

This view looks westerly from the Salem Road interchange:

More to come...

I've noticed that a lot too. I drove from Toronto to Kingston yesterday and I was barely able to use cruise control the whole way because of the amount of speed fluctuation in the heavy traffic. Traffic does seem to be getting heavier along there.

I think that if VIA builds dedicated passenger tracks, it will take pressure off the 401 east of Toronto. Not only will more people be inclined to take the train, but the existing CN tracks will gain more freight capacity, which could reduce truck traffic.

Kenora to Thunder Bay, along the Trans-Canada. The last bit shows a few of Thunder Bay's main streets in the day and night time. Dryden around the 4 minute mark or so.

I noticed there were a lot more passing lanes going east than coming west on that drive. Traffic was fine on the way and brutal on the way back.

Heading away from Thunder Bay is a back haul route for transports (more goods come into the city than go out of it at this point), so the trucks going toward the city move slower, necessitating more passing lanes for them.

Cheap as hell to ship things out of Thunder Bay though. A full transport from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg costs little more than half as much as one going the opposite direction. At work we've gotten shipping companies to send people at the strangest times just for an opportunity to send their Winnipeg drivers back in a truck that was carrying *something*. Normal prices apply if you're going somewhere other than Winnipeg though. Pickle Lake is shipping out even less than Thunder Bay does...

Dryden to Thunder Bay was my least favourite Northern Ontario drive I had to do during my time up there for work over the past few months. Seemed like as soon as you got past the passing lanes you'd be stuck behind a transport truck. Didn't help that we were rushing to get to the TBay airport (made it 30 mins before flight left!).

^ Agree. Highway 17 between Dryden and TBay (well Sistonen's Corner really) is unbelievably boring. The highway is flat and there is almost nothing to look at. Highway 11 west of Shabaqua is nice though.

Highways 11/17 and 102 from Shabaqua to the city is a really nice drive though.

17/11 from Thunder Bay to Fort Frances was quite nice. Also East of Thunder Bay to Nipigon and then Rossport was gorgeous.

11 North of Nipigon gives BC Highway 1 a run for its money.

11 from Nipigon to about Beardmore is nice, but east of that it's as boring as the highway near Dryden.

I drove it over night in July and got to the cliffs on the west side around noon. After spending the trip west dodging more moose than I'd seen in the rest of my combined life on 17, I decided to try something different.

Just got back from a weekend trip to Ottawa. (Freddy to Ottawa Friday, Ottawa to Freddy on Sunday).

There's a 40km stretch between Riviere de Loup and St Louis de Ha-ha that still needs to be done, otherwise it's fantastic four lane highway all the way through.

Quebec did 'cheap' out by just expanding the highway to 4-5 lanes through some of the towns instead of having 2 separated highways; but for the most part, it was a good sweet ride through. The old Irving Truckstop right at the Quebec border's days will be numbered; it isn't too far off the highway, but it's not obvious how to get to it if you didn't know it was there.

The A30 around Montreal is a fantastic bypass. There's a slight clog due to construction where the TCH and A30 meet, and the exit to the Island also backs up bad as well (at least when we went through) but otherwise it was smooth as silk.

Only issues with it:
* Notification that it has a Toll caught us by surprise. Furthermore there was no pricing signs until you actually GET to the Toll station; hard to prepare your money ahead of time.

* The west end connection to the A10 and A20 could use some ironing out. They were fine enough, but seemed a bit too turny for a modern highway basically.

* Google Map's was still trying to keep us on the TCH and across the island even with A30 available.

As for Ottawa itself, it's the first time I've been up there in 10 years, and I was blown away by how much its changed. One of the biggest things I took from it though (since we were staying in the West end) is that the city needs a new East-West Controlled access artery. The Queensway is too deep in the city and has way too mcuh traffic (especially with construction going on).

We crossed back West to East south through Barhaven and that's just packed full of places now. Maybe the province should start planning a new highway now, getting land now and controlling access; maybe around Route-8 around Manotik feels about right (from my extremely limited experience); just to link 417 and 416 basically.

Anyways, just some observations from my trip. Hopefully it won't be another 10 years before I head westward by road.
