Pretty sure has Philly dropped out and was surpassed by Phoenix, of all places.

Nope, hasn't happened--at least not yet:

Phoenix has not surpassed Philadelphia yet, although it most likely will by the 2020 census baring some catastrophic slow down in Phoenix's growth or a drastic uptick in Philadelphia's growth.

This is however, not really a concern for me since Phoenix is very clearly the smaller city with simply larger boundaries. Phoenix is 516 sq miles, Philadelphia is 134 square miles. Phoenix is already bigger population wise than DC, Miami, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, etc... no way is it a larger or more important city than these cities however.

If we made Philly's borders 516 sq miles, how would our population compare to Pheonix? From my rough calculation, that would include areas in all directions 6 miles....bala cynwyd, cherry hill, camden, everything west of 295, king of prussia.

Those southern cities are crazy. Hell, San Antonio is ranked at 7th!!!! I was there for a week and was surprised to see NO ONE on the street for work at 10am. The city is pretty in some areas, but the place can hardly be considered a "city".

If it would help, I'm sure Delaware County would cede Darby and environs to Philly.

What happened was that in the 1850s Philadelphia city and Philadelphia county consolidated. If you look at the 1790 census, no fewer than three of the largest cities in the country (Philly, Germantown, Southwark IIRC) in the country were in Philadelphia County.

Essentially what happened was the first time a city was merged with its metropolitan area. An equivalent effect would be had if Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, and Delaware counties all merged today.

Actually New Amsterdam was never the largest city in America. In early colonial history Boston was the largest city, followed by New Amsterdam. As New Amsterdam became New York it remained in 2nd place until it was surpassed by Philadelphia in the early 18th century which then also surpassed Boston to become the largest city in America by the mid 18th century. Philadelphia remained the largest city through America's fight for independence, though by the time America took its first census in 1790 it had been surpassed by NYC. This is misleading though as then Philadelphia was ridiculously small (about 2 square miles) and didn't include Northern Liberties and Southwark which were actually among the 10 most populous cities in America in that 1790 census. Philadelphia remained the largest metro in America until the 1810 census when it was surpassed by New York and they've been America's largest ever since.

There were actually four Philadelphia county cities that appeared in the top 10. Besides Philadelphia, it was Northern Liberties, Southwark and Spring Garden. Although they never appeared in top 10 all together. Northern Liberties and Southwark were in the top 10 for much of early American history while Spring Garden didn't show up until the 1850 census by which time Southwark had fallen out of the top ten. They would all be gone the next census due to the 1854 consolidation act you mentioned.

Ok , I will try to avoid a pissing contest with members here while simultaneously
attempting to fortify my delusional argument .......
IF , Philly had the same land mass as Phoenix ,.... i.e. all of Delaware and about half
of Montgomery County , the cities population would be up around 2,540,000 . As for
Boston vs New York ( New Amsterdam ) in the late 1700's ..... Shit man , I don't keep
canned goods for more than a month ..... but thanks for correcting my ancient history
candor . OMG , I wish I had come up with that pussy line .

Brandywine Realty sitting pretty as it continues Phila. redevelopment

http://mobile.philly.com/beta?wss=/philly/business&id=343266402

Quote:
Brandywine Realty Trust is putting open space on a pedestal in University City. Literally.

The developer unveils Monday its Cira Green plaza, a 1.25-acre, publicly accessible expanse of grass and paved walkways atop a 95-foot-high parking structure just west of the Schuylkill.

Its opening marks the latest chapter in Brandywine's bid to remake a huge swath of central Philadelphia around 30th Street Station - an area bordering the campus of Drexel University up to the riverbanks opposite the Philadelphia Museum of Art - as the once-suburban company solidifies its urban presence.
A couple of interesting tidbits here:

Quote:
The "30th Street Station District Plan" participants - which include Amtrak and Drexel, among others - are set to unveil in December their latest outline for what would be a dense new neighborhood of homes and offices over the yards, said Natalie Shieh, the plan's project director.
and:

Quote:
That land sits next to 25,000 square feet owned by Brandywine behind 30th Street Station, where a Cira II had once been planned.
Is Cira II no longer in the plans?
