The Forks development agency and the North Portage development agency merged back in 1994 creating the Forks North Portage development agency.

The revenue from the parking at Portage Place goes into supporting the Forks development and other things the FNP want to support such as programs around the Central Park area.

There are approximate 1500 stalls at Portage Place so that is a fair amount of money to give up.

doesnt scot bathgate own that lot on that corner and the richardsons the rest?

they made an anouncement last yr or earlyer this yr about this project being back there on their land be interesting to see what they build

Richardson owns almost all the land back there, Bathgate only owns a small portion directly off the corner. If you look at the google satalite images you can see the white fence around the only portion that is Bathgate.

If a small portion stays, the city should demand a tall wrought iron fence with plenty of landscaping. That is very unsightly to say the least.

Somebody was recently asking about the development on the old Grace Hospital site in Wolseley. There was a brief story in the Free Press about it today:

"A new 59-unit apartment complex — including up to 30 government-subsidized affordable housing units — will rise from the site of the old Grace Hospital on Evanson Street in Wolseley.

The $15-million project was unveiled at a noon-hour news conference today.

The Old Grace Housing Co-operative, which is behind the project, said the complex will consist of three buildings assembled in a U-shape with a central courtyard. It will include a mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments."

This sounds great, anyone know the architect or where to find more pictures?

Also I'm curious, in other provinces does the government provide money to create affordable units? I remember someone saying a while back that places like Vancouver have a bylaw that every building has to contain affordable units... do they subsidize that or is it on the developer?

The minute sample of what the development will look like is pleasant, and homey. I think it will be a wonderful addition to the area.

so now that Calgary and Edmonton will become ghost towns will we see increase in population?

its safe to say ndp have killed the alberta advantage almost every big oil company is cutting ties with alberta selling their land and cancelling their projects.. the ndp are planning to increase corporate taxes and increase taxes on the rich,, while at the same time increase their minimum wage to 15 bux an hour.. most experts predict that cude oil will not even be profitable in the near future and will probably not go up to 80 bux a barrel til atleast 2025... so what I'm saying is alberta is done for..

telus is cutting job, shaw relocated... almost every oil company in alberta has layed off over 40 percent of their staff and 90 percent of those ppl will never be rehired... this is major stuff yet media doesn't report on it because their all tree huggers who want to kill the oil sand digging..

I feel bad for Calgary and Edmonton they were once have provinces now alberta is going to probably be 100 billion dollars in debt in the next 5 years.

ndp wants to diversify their economy by investing in alternative energy sources

but you know who the leader of that would be who has the most water, wind energy MANITOBA our province is going to be the biggest benificiatry of alternative energy market... and the Manitoba damn projects will pay off long term... plus mining exploration is going to go down in every province but ours...

I see Manitoba taking over alberta as a have province in the next 10 years

we get more sun energy, wind energy and water energy than almost every other province.. plus with out inland port we can be leader in manufacturing and transportation aswel.. where alberta sits it has no real advantage not geographical location.. no real sources of water energy no real wind energy.. it has no advantage that manioba has.. they cant diversify their province and now their going to raise their taxes to the point where most businesses are going to run away..

small businesses cant afford to pay employees 15 dollars an hour and big businesses don't want to pay more taxes and royalty fees...

I love ppl Manitoba is on the up and up mark my words

Sorry this may not be the best thread for this, but it does have construction-related implications:

The Academy Road BIZ' elections are coming up (I think next week) and while in the past no one really contested the members, I was told by an existing member that a whole swath of people from the "Transparency" campaign are running to try and oust the existing (pro-development) board and stop the doctors office and change the development plan.

She told me they all have to go canvassing to get a certain amount of signed nominations, and then I'm not 100% sure how the vote works, but they're worried that these people (re: fools) have a legitimate chance of taking over. It's scary. I will try and find out when the election is as they may need some advocates to show up.\\

The BIZ' website is down right now which is really annoying.
