At first I was just happy this pit that has been sitting there for a decade is going to get filled. That's changed on second look. It may be in the suburbs and it may be an old folks home but it looks like an Edmonton abortion to me. That is certain to be a stucco mess.

I wonder why they just can't take the best townhouse designs of yesteryear (e.g., early 1900s) and use these (with modern interiors)?

See that's the problem though. This is their attempt at aping Classic design. Mishmashed shit. Because of costs and lack of skills today it is impossible to replicate styles of the past. That's why I oppose faux historicism. Also it bugs the hell out of me when you have a new build where the interior does not match the exterior. Before it was always traditional exteriors with modern interiors. Lately though I've seen contemporary and modern stuff with traditional inside. Why?!?

So I went through my photos of the trip and found this one I had my wife snap while we were driving by the spawn of the clocktower.

Actually, this is far from bad. The streetscaping is superb. The building accommodates the road's curve (a lot of modernist buildings are rectilinear boxes and would just have made some sort of vacuous plaza out of the remainder), and the architect understands something about visually separating the ground floor pedestal and the top 2 floors above the 3rd story cornice line from the remainder of the building.

I've been thinking about this too since it was posted. It's really not bad at all and I did a search on Google Earth and the residential area with houses that is part of the same development is also quite attractive.

Of course what you don't see in the picture is that there is a big-ass Walmart Supercentre with a huge parking lot virtually right across the street from it.

I disagree. Where condo builders fail, Toronto's custom home developers (and midrise developers) shine in nailing proportions and using smart alternatives to expensive materials (i.e using concrete in place of stone and splurging on copper accents, window frames, railings, real brick accents above/below windows) There are countless neighborhoods full of excellent faux historic homes.

Yes that's why I said the spawn of the Clocktower.

I agree with Signal, that commie block in Hamilton isn't that bad.

The Carriage House Inn in Calgary however is hideous. It's the blending of claddings and the repulsive roof accent.

Believe it or not the Carriage House reno looked even worse for a bit. They had a giant broadcast antenna centred on the roof that made the crown look even more awkward. Thankfully they got rid of it as you could see the thing for miles. It still astonishes me that they likely spent millions of dollars on that crap renovation. Think of the amount of material wasted on that pointless crown. Did an architect actually come up with this or was it the owner's ideas that ultimately made the cut?
