^ I wish that building was still around... It would have been the perfect anchor at the foot of Portage Avenue. I don't think it was demolished until the early 90s or so... right around the time that the city stopped letting anyone demolish old warehouses for any reason they could think of.
One could also imagine the U of M's potential had it not only stayed downtown, but expanded over the decades. I believe that would have been a game changer.

I have heard from different people the last few years that the U of M is looking to expand some programs in The Exchange a bit. Mostly distance/continuing education programs. The Massey building is at max capacity.
The Codville Building that recluse posted. I think it was torn down sometime in the early 90s, maybe around 1990-91 or thereabouts. It was right at the foot of Portage Ave E, where the Goldeyes parking lot is now.

^ You'd probably recognize the old painted billboard on the side, it was much more prominent than the facade. Unfortunately I couldn't find any pics through a quick image search.
Had the Codville Bldg made it to the era of fairly generous incentives for the renovation of heritage buildings I'm sure it would probably be rehabilitated and performing some useful function by now. But alas...
It was demolished in 1993. There were some additional beautiful buildings in the vicinity, such as the Commercial Building and Winnipeg Paint and Glass.
Across from Scott-Bathgate is a two storey nondescript building which I believe was part of The Winnipeg Paint & Glass Co. Such a small building compared to a surface lot is dramatic.
I distinctly remember when they tore that building down someone spray painted the words HERITAGE LOST across the façade. It is one of those images that has stuck in my mind's eye because I didn't really understand at the time.
