Not bad, considering it's a parking lot right now.

^ That rendering surfaced about 2 years ago. Given the location in a clump of generally drab government and government-related office buildings near Portage and Broadway, I'm guessing it was pitched as a project aimed at a government agency of some sort? Possible MLLC head office contender? That actually kind of looks like the MLLC logo up top...

That render is on a billboard on the site. Google Streetview picked it up in July.

200 years from now that lost mural will be rediscovered.

^^^ The Museum received $10m from the government for a $16m gallery renovation project. The Museum will be trying to raise up to $160 million for a major capital plan to build a new science museum and archive space in a building across the street.

^ The gallery renovations/expansion are great news. There is a noticeable lack of First Nations content, and the Winnipeg story gets dropped around the time of the war, so there are clearly gaps. The whole place could use a bit of a freshening up too.

That museum plan is quite nice; definitely needed to augment efforts to revitalize that part of downtown. Now, about the McLaren Hotel...

Agreed. I've often thought that redevelopment of the McLaren would be huge. Is it a case of whoever owns it wanting a pile of cash for the building, given the location?

I imagine he is waiting for CV to make the right offer. I would be interested in finding out if anyone has offered to purchase it.

Why doesn't the museum start with the parts of the design on their existing buildings. It would seem to be fairly easy changes and have a decent impact.

That is the plan, they said the new building is the final phase, likely 5+ years away... depending on how long it takes to raise all the money.

It'll be interesting to see with a new government in if CMHR, and then MM, and the feds are able to figure out their funding agreement.

The traffic downtown this week has been the worst I've ever seen, today:
- Smith is down to 2 lanes north of Portage (backs up all the way to broadway, still lots of work to go)
- Portage EB down to 1 lane IN RUSH HOUR (btwn Maryland & Osborne)
- Osborne 1 lane each way from WAG – Broadway
- Hargrave still one lane

Might be more but that's what affected me today.

I've said it before but the lack of project planning is incomprehensible. It's absolute insanity that they "planned" almost every major downtown street's volume to be significantly reduced all that the same time.

^ We wanted the roads fixed, and they're giving it to us!

But yes, it has been a bit more difficult lately. My commute down Osborne was hampered by not one but two construction zones (near Broadway and again near the bus garage), but at least the more southerly project recently wrapped up.

I get the demands of our climate and all, but it would be nice if these could be staged a little more efficiently...

We sure are having a good fall for road work. William has been dug up for ages for conduit work and they are making good progress.

Any news on what is going to be build on Arlington and Preston Ave in Wolsoley? I'm really hoping for apartments or a condo.

I heard it was going to be a co-op, however I suspect the person who told me was confusing it with the former Grace Hospital site on Evanson.

Anyone have info on the St. Charles Hotel? This saga is incredibly tiresome.

Seems that the landlord is intent on waiting until either someone torches it, or it starts falling apart and has to be demolished. Roughly the same model as their neighbours at the Royal Albert.

It's sad because those two hotels could be anchors for the Exchange District (the Albert sort of was, not all that long ago). Instead they're slowly rotting away.
