They were talking about the U de M nursing home project on CBC Information Morning today.

It will be a campus type setting, with three buildings consisting of a senior's apartment complex, an assisted living facility and a 60 bed nursing home. The complex will be tied into the U de M Health Sciences campus for research purposes. It will cost $50M and a total of 350 beds (of all types) will be included in the project.

The project is intended for the francophone community, with retired U de M staff getting preference (I don't agree with this, it smacks of elitism and I would think this might be unpopular even in the francophone community).

When asked specifically if anglophones woukd be excluded from the 60 nursing home beds, the U de M VP they were interviewing dodged the question by stating that the nursing home beds would be under the control of the provincial department of social services and questions regarding that should be directed towards them. Nice deke, but with the environment and the language of work being entirely French, I would imagine that anglophones would only be placed in this facility as a last resort.

On the brighter side, apparently the province is issuing another RFP for an additional 60 nursing home beds in greater Moncton. Perhaps this second facility will be a little more inclusive.........

EDIT - The project has three components, but four buildings with a connecting "pavillion". Occupancy is in about two years time.

Given how this project is being presented, why would an anglophone want to go there in the first place?

I agree. The project stinks of anglophobia.

The real issue is whether the greenlighting of this project means that it will be significantly easier for a francophone to get into an advanced nursing home bed than it will be for an anglophone. If so, then this is blatantly unfair.

I note again however that there was some indication the government might RFP another 60 nursing home beds in the greater Moncton area. If so, then this issue will go away.

Drove by the Morton Avenue Projects, and it looked like they where digging for the footings for the Nursing home project, and also there was a crew across the road removing the last houses foundation Where the restaurant/Shopping strip should sit.

It's going to be awfully busy at that corner next year with two major projects ongoing at the same time on opposite sides of the street.

This is a partial rendering of what the nursing home project project will look like.
The picture is missing the actual 60-bed nursing home which is located above this image.

Credit: Acadie Nouvelle

From what I can see there will be three 5-story buildings, one 4-story building and two 2-story buildings.

Thanks Phil - looks interesting. Five stories is more than I was expecting.

It looks like there going to have it ready to be connected to the rest of the area if that area is ever developed as the plans are, or at least where to be.

Here i took a picture of the poster. Looks like the top part will be the retirement home, the rest of it will be an activity center + quite a few adapted residences.

EDIT : sorry if it's a bit big... it's my first time posting.

Worth noting is that the original view showed three 5-storey buildings, while the new one shows those buildings are 4 storeys.

Also, the footprint and roof architecture of the central building (accueil et bien-être) is the same as Parkland at the Gardens in Halifax:

Though half the height, that'd be a nice-looking building if they use the same design.

Wow if this project pans put like that it will really fix that section of town. That project coupled with the commercial development on the other side of the street it will change that end of time.

I have been looking back through the forums and trying to figure out what they are building on Mill Road behind the former bernard lord office extending behind it following the humphrey foot path. I can only assume it is residential but it will definitely be taking up a large portion of land. I don't see anything on here. thanks.

Here you go Hogie

This is the site plan from a couple of years ago. Of course, there might have been some revisions since then, but it is a rather large development (I count about 25 units) and it will have a fairly nice natural setting next to Humphrey Brook, the walking trail and the CNR mainline (on the other side of the brook). I've walked the Humphrey Brook Trail a number of times, and there always seems to be a lot of urban wildlife there (especially pheasants).

Abridged, from CBC

Elmwood Drive speed limit lowered near Moncton High School
Lack of sidewalks on stretch of Elmwood Drive results in students walking near vehicles
By Ian Bonnell, CBC News Posted: Nov 02, 2015 7:38 AM AT| Last Updated: Nov 02, 2015 7:38 AM AT

The speed limit on a section of Elmwood Drive, near Moncton High School, has been lowered as a safety measure for students who walk on the side of the twisty, tree-lined road.

The school was built about 2.5 kilometres from the closest convenience store and coffee shop and students sometimes make the trek along the busy road to grab lunch.

That section of Elwood Drive has wide, paved shoulders, but no sidewalks.

On Oct. 20, the city lowered the speed limit in the area to 60 km/h from 80 km/h.

Alcide Richard of the city engineering department hints more changes might be coming.

"I know that the people who were in contact with us were probably looking for a little bit more even, but understood that this was a first step, if you want to look at it that way," he said.

Richard said there are plans to build sidewalks from the convenience store past Moncton High. The project is set to start in 2017 and take two years to complete.

Personal note - $$$$$. I think the cost of the sidewalks on Elmwood should be docked directly from Claude Williams MLA retirement fund.......

Totally agree. What a joke.
And as for the "wide, paved shoulders" along that section of Elmwood Drive, I will congratulate the city for building these wide, paved shoulders over-night! Because I drove that section last night and there were none, and this CBC story says they are there, so therefore they must have built them overnight in just 10 hours or so. A miracle!
I also wonder how many MHS students walk 2.5 kilometres to get to the store. And then another 2.5 kms back to school, in order to get a sandwich at the store? I would guess somewhere between none and zero.
I also noted the new lower speed limit when I drove by last night - twice. The sign might say 60, but every single car was still moving between 80 and 90 kph. But it's okay, they put up a sign. Hooray! Everyone's safe now.
Good heavens!

IIRC, the project got into some delays. I believe it had to do with being too close to the brook and possibly the trail but you can never trust my memory on these things. Glad to see it back on track.
Back when it was conceived, they hired the guy who bought Castle Manor as the project manager. Not sure if he's still associated with this project or not.

Has anyone else noticed that since they cleared off the lot for the McLaughlin Place retail development, that the Moncton Stadium is now much more visible from Morton Avenue westbound?

I noticed that today.
I'd like to ask if anyone has any News about the new Ecole Champlain Location. I know where they are planing to build it, and driving in that area noticed what would possibly be the only suitable location on Erinvale but the lot seems a little bigger then what would be needed for a primary school with staff, and visitors parking, and a play area if the paths that look to be man made are in fact the property lines.

They started building it this summer. Quite a bit has been completed. I'll try to remember and take a couple of pics when I go for my walk today.
