New Suburbs: Kensington

The city is also doing some interesting things with Kensington out on the west side. They are using a 'fused grid' street layout, a combination of suburban and grid styles that is apparently in vogue right now. They've also made provisions for preserving the West Swale, a similar but much smaller old river channel like the NE Swale that runs through all of the new Blaimore neighbourhoods.

I haven't driven through there to see how it's setup, maybe someone has?

I live in Kensington and really enjoy the road layouts. They make it difficult to cut through the residential areas and really encourage through traffic to stay on the main roads. They've also done a good job or putting in numerous small pocket parks within easy walking distance of all the various residents. Next to come will be the commercial areas in the south and in a few years another commercial area in the north. Once that is all done it will be a really walkable neighborhood with a good mix of single family, townhomes and condos.

Yes, as many of us have discussed, it's a missed opportunity, one which only comes along every 50-100 years it seems.

The other day I was walking down broadway bridge, the intensely loud noise and wind from vehicles whizzing by a mere 3 feet away, preventing my girlfriend and I from having a calm conversation as I looked over at the unused traffic bridge feeling nothing but disappointment that I will never get to enjoy a peaceful stroll over the river from a place with such visual scenery.

You'll be happy to know that Kensington will be the first neighborhood in Saskatoon with a new Save On Foods! Zoning was approved by the city a couple weeks ago and construction will start in the spring. Huge win for the community.

That's awesome and exactly what I was hoping for. DREAM had talked about grocery but I was a bit leery as all the big grocery players were already set up on the far west side with Safeway and Superstore in Confed, and the New Coop just built on 33rd. The options before Save On said they were coming were pretty scarce.

Save On, Shoppers, Conexus and Brown's Social House already confirmed for the Kensington side with all the Blairmore shops just on the other side of 22nd things are finally coming around for us west siders.

might as well turn it into a big skating rink for the winter. I highly doubt anything will begin until springtime.

Is that rendering correct, Alexander's next door looks to have three stores in the back?

Looks like a nice addition. To bad the corner lot is being used for parking at Alexander's.

At least we can't complain about yet another exciting project turned into a gravel parking lot instead (because this one is just dirt, they haven't even bothered with gravel).

I have heard this project will be happening in April 2016. Subway will be closing at that time and then will be part of the re-build.

Similar area.....any recent updates on the hotel that is to be build near Griffith's stadium? Last I heard it was put on hold.

Sounds like it's going to start spring 2016.

To be fair, every project in Saskatoon's history has a start date of "next spring".

In other news, looks like there's some change afoot on 2nd ave, including Atmosphere Design Lounge moving:

There was a coffee house, fronting on 3rd, that vacated the building not so long ago. That would be my guess.
