To be honest I think the most people who really champion Skytrain down Fraser highway also support going all the way to UBC as well.
True there are alot of UBC students who would get a freebie using the Broadway Line. But there are also UBC residents, teachers, researchers, not to mention Broadway itself.
There, a high concentration of office jobs, residential, and people in the medical professions linking up with the research facilities at UBC. Excuse me but I find your take on this
limited, and tunnel-visioned.

Trofirhen has this issue right. People only think of things as they already think of them.

When the Canada Line went in, they found 15,000 people a week using it to run out to River Rock Casino from Vancouver every week.

It was just too good an idea to go out there, drink as much as you want and Canada Line back home, late at night .. totally safe, very quick, reliable and no roadblocks from the police just because you "had a few".

When the UBC line is fully built, people are going to be shocked not only at how many more people are going to ride that line than are projected ... but also that the traffic will be two way.

People will choose to live at or near UBC and work in Coquitlam. Medical start ups by the dozen will situate on that pipeline/artery somewhere between VanGen hospital and the UBC teaching hospital.

Software start ups (and I some direct experience in this department) that located between Cambie and Main, Broadway and 2nd Ave, are going to be expanding ... why ... because as some people I know said ... Cambie and Broadway is two blocks away and the B-line runs along Broadway and people can bike here. That was three years ago and now they are looking to double their space.

People are moving back into the city because they like it. Open up that artery/pipeline and they will flood, not walk back in.

Whatever you think is happening on Cambie from 25th to 73rd will happen at three times that rate on the Clark to UBC corridor when the full line opens.

Some of the projections for the full UBC line are that 140,000 people a day will ride it.

What short sighted drivel. They will get 140,000 people just to Cambie and Broadway.

/s is shorthand for end sarcasm. It wasn't meant as a serious comment.

Ha! I didn't notice that. Hey bardak... /s on a newline works better. /sarcasm works even better.

/s is a reddit thing and stupid. But unfortunately people seriously say stuff like that so I guess it's needed.

I have no doubt Fraser Hwy skytrain would be a great success, as would a line across the north shore/Indian Arm to Tri-Cities. A lot of things would be nice to have, but we don't get to have nice things, or even the basics thanks to our plebiscite.

That form of internet slang long-predates Reddit, and dates back to IRC chat, I believe, when it was originally a command line-driven platform. I think one typed '/exit' or '/end' to log out or exit the conversation; I'm not sure.

One would use '/' as an inside-joke shorthand for 'end', so one would type /debate, /discussion, /thread, etc., when an especially devastating point had been made in a chatroom. /sarcasm, or just /s, would tell one that the previous statement was in jest.

Double the distance in half the time. A TBM only costs about 10 million to buy and is good for between 40 to 60 miles before it is junk.
A better use of TBMs:

a) TBM1 creates the westbound tunnel from Great Northern Way launch pit to Arbutus pit
b) TBM2 creates the eastbound tunnel from Great Northern Way launch pit to Arbutus pit

c) TBM3 creates the westbound tunnel from Arbutus launch pit to UBC pit
d) TBM4 creates the eastbound tunnel from Arbutus launch pit to UBC pit

With all four TBMs running almost simultaneously, all the tunneling could be completed in less than two years.

the Great Northern Way, Arbutus and UBC launch pits become the Great Northern Way, Arbutus and UBC stations after the TBMs are removed - similar to the Olympic station on the Canada line.

Add another few years to get the stations built.

Opening day could happen before the next election, so the politicians who started the project can get their pictures taken cutting the ribbon on the finished product (and may get re-elected).

Or 3 & 4 start at UBC, meeting at Arbutus. The Arbutus hole/station would be open less time affording 3 or 4 months less street level disruption, as it would be only an exit pit before being finished as a station station.

Indeed. Time to move some points to the transit fantasy thread.

*red-paladin uses semaphore flags to both spell out 'off topic' and direct everyone back to the subject at hand simultaneously* (In the spirit of IRC)

I've moved all of the Broadway line / discussion of funding, all of that from the Evergreen Extension thread to this thread.
We were all off topic, myself included!

a transit system is a living thing

@Red Paladin

The move of everything to this site from Evergreen is, of course, technically correct. But not really, when you think about it.

A transit system is a living thing. It grows to fill a city to its current limits and then it grows further as a city grows.

That means that the Evergreen/Millennium/whatever the name will be Line is really the same issue. For more reasons than it will all be the same line one day.

The issues are multiple, three layers of politics, multiple layers at the municipal level, technical issues, economic issues, neighbourhood NIIMBY issues, etc.

The "east west" line is all one issue, when you think about it and the division between the west side and the east side (now winding down) are somewhat artificial.

No criticism here .. just saying.

The Arbutus pit can be there as long as its needed for the tunneling and station construction.

Just put a roof on the pit (level with the road) so traffic can run as normal over the pit while the workers are in the pit.

Justin has promised massive infrastructure investment, even if it means a deficit. He has roots in Vancouver, and might chip in.

The feds will put up their 1/3rd but locals still need to add in their 1/3rd. I can't see a Liberal federal government just chipping in a magical 2/3rds. Although that would be nice .

No, but they are setting up an infrastructure bank that can loan Metro Vancouver part of their 1/3 at low rates.

Smoke and mirrors funding could also reduce the local cost without looking like it is breaking the 1/3 funding formula.

e.g. UBC contributes an amount to the project and a while later the Prov's and Fed's announce a grant to UBC for higher education for a similar amount. or the Fed's announce one of their corporate welfare grants to Quebec Industry and the cost of the trains and some of the engineering for the project disappears from the bill or.....

Government's can get creative when they want to, especially if they look good doing it. e.g. Look at the tax cut JT is bringing in for the middle class. Run the numbers. No benefit under $44K or over $217K. The hidden fact is the biggest reduction is for people between $90K and $200K.(middle class?????) My point is not political, it's simply that with good spin doctors things can get done.

if they make this extension, would there be an extra OMC built like with the Evergreen-Line? can they add more capacity to the current, Expo-Line OMC? it looks about maxed out with tracks as it is.

Evergreen facility have room for future expansion. They can always purchase the bc hydro site if they need even more room.
