Don't they spray the fire retardant stuff on the non-galvanized steel beams here in the U.S which also acts as an antioxidant to prevent corrosion from moisture. BTW, I see that more common than the galvanized steel beams.

I work for an Italian owned company and since being there they've worked on some large expansion projects. They bring in Italian contractors mostly, and all the steel looks exactly like the CHOP site. So yes, it must be a European thing.

Nice! This is starting to go up fast. Seems when the other phases come to fruition, the complex will block the view of those ugly factories from many vantage points in the city.

I don't have a dog in the Naval Square fight (it doesn't bother me), nor do I find blocking the steam plant to be the most significant benefit. I hated the monstrosity that used to occupy this site longer than I can remember. Having something like this replace it is enough for me.

Personally I thought that building would have been a great candidate for adaptive reuse. I'm imagining modern windows in the now-demolished building (with a garden roof on top), flanked by the two towers. I think it could have looked great. I think the biggest monstrosities in that area are the AT&T behemoth, the new South Street Bridge...er... Highway, and as I mentioned above, the gated Tool Bro community in the middle of an urban neighborhood. I respect your opinion, however.
