Meh, in many historic cities in the world, there are statues of kings, queens, and other important figures who built statues for themselves.

As long as the park looks good, I don't really care if they want to put a statue of themselves or their grandfather as long as they did something substantial to contribute to the development and progress of Atlanta.

I am glad to see that Tomochichi is included. Native Americans have often gotten the shaft here in Georgia.

This is the coolest part of the project to me. I can't think of another major city with a huge monument to Native Americans.

The park is also co-chaired by Andrew Young which speaks volumes.

I've heard this sort of sentiment before regarding Cook. But if we get a new Park out of it more power to him!

Well, he's someone who certainly cares about the city. I remember in high school he was one of the young folks pushing the "Save the Fox" effort! I think the park would be remarkable and a great assest for downtown.

Civil Rights Park

This is a great idea and needs to be built. Atlanta is the cradle of the civil rights movement and a park like the one proposed would really be a differentiating, world class attraction that no other city can claim. Plus it would give a nice shot in the arm to a neighborhood that needs it.

I think he's a little confused about what the park is. It's a revival of the original Mims Park which was designed by Olmsted and named for Livingston Mims long before Cook was born. If you want to an actual example of a self-serving statue, see Loudermilk Park in Buckhead...

I should have clarified the "self-serving" part; I know that it's meant to also be dedicated to the civil rights leaders and peace makers of our city...but they're also proposing this to be done under the National Monuments Foundation's purview - which is where the self-serving part comes in considering Cook founded that organization. I wasn't referencing a statue of himself and I know that it's in reference to his great-great uncle's tenure as Atlanta Mayor (who donated the land for the original park).

When the public is involved (which the City of Atlanta is) there should be some cautious reminders of just exactly what this park is serving/doing for the area.

It's crazy to think Buckhead could seriously become it's own city if it wanted to. It has the wealth, the jobs, and the core CBD to do it along with great shopping. Buckhead is also a pretty well known iconic name.

YES, that skyline alone is more impressive than Nashville, will even say Charlotte as well. And so many other cities 3 times it's population..Birmingham is not even worth mentioning with barely four mid size buildings.

Indeed. But it's also the iconic name of a non-iconic town in East Georgia.

It's an impressive skyline, and that's just the area around Lenox. There's quite a bit going on in the Village and along Peachtree to the south.

Atlanta is really getting to be a big city.

Buckhead skyline is probably about as large as the Charlotte skyline. The Charlotte skyline may have higher skyscrapers, but Buckhead's skylines definitely has the density now and it's pretty long. Buckhead's skyline at this point is larger than Downtown Atlanta's skyline.

The listing for office space in Eviva Peachtree is gone from loopnet and showcase sites though the retail listing remains on both sites.

I can't remember if I previously posted this or not, but as part of the redesign, the office portion of 811 has been removed.

Knew it wouldn't happen...
