Battle for 1 St. James Place intensifies
Hamilton Spectator By Matthew Van Dongen
The owners of 1 St. James Place say they will apply to demolish the newly designated historic home because it is unsafe and full of mould.
Council voted to impose an 11th-hour heritage designation on the property last year, voiding a city permit that would have allowed the owner to demolish the 78-year-old home's porch and attached garage and create a parking area near St. Joseph's Hospital.
Now that a provincial board has ruled in favour of the designation, co-owner Victor Veri has told the city he will file another demolition permit — this time for the entire building.
Veri said in a letter to council recent engineering and consulting reports show the building "is in unsafe condition, has health issues and it is not practicable to repair or restore."
Council and the heritage committee would have to weigh in on a demolition permit request, said Coun. Jason Farr, who predicted the request would face "an uphill battle."
Veri said Wednesday night if council rejects the permit request he would appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board.
