Am I the only one that finds it strange that there was no mention of an agreement being signed between the City of Moncton and Bird Construction on the events centre? I know that they mentioned in a Times and Transcript article on Monday or Tuesday that is was a formality. However, unless I missed it, there was nothing reported on the next steps and so forth after Wednesdays deadline.

Welcome to the forums.

Yes, I noticed the deafening silence too, and was wondering about it. I hesitated saying anything without any corroborating evidence. It is strange though that nothing was mentioned in the media.

What's the translation? In other words - I'm not really in tune with all of the formalities around this and what that means?

In the absence of actual media confirmation that the final contracts have been signed, then we have no choice but to speculate that something might have happened to delay the contract signing.

It's probably no biggie. In all likelihood there might have been the requirement for some final legal tweaking of the language of the contract. There is good will on both sides and I'm sure that the whole thing is a fait accompli. The contracts (if not already signed) will likely be signed in the next couple of weeks.

I seen that the work was actually visible, and got a massive grin from ear to ear. I've been seeing employees walk the site for a while but it looked like nothing was being done that whole time.

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but city council has retained CBRE as construction project managers for the events centre project. This is the last piece of the puzzle.

I expect site preparation work this fall, but we shouldn't expect to see any actual construction until next spring. At that point, we can probably change the title of this thread from [Approved] to [Under Construction]

from the City of Moncton's website:

Downtown Centre Public Information Session

MONCTON – The City of Moncton and Bird Construction will be hosting a joint Downtown Centre public information session on Monday, October 26, 2015 at 7 pm at the Capitol Theatre. The event will provide some insight into the vision and the design of the facility.

“Now that the commercial and legal contracts have been signed, we are ready to proceed to the next step,” stated Mayor George LeBlanc. “The purpose of the public session is to share with our residents the vision behind the architectural design and give them a feel for what they will be experiencing once the facility is open in 2018.”

Simultaneous translation will be offered in English and French.

Construction of the Downtown Centre is set to begin in the spring of 2016. The Centre is scheduled to open its doors in September 2018.

Some requests for variances concerning the events centre will be presented at the October PAC meeting:

Quote:
Stantec on behalf of City of Moncton/ au nom de Ville de Moncton 1110 rue Main Street, Moncton (PID/NID 70592878) variances to: (1) allow portion of the building to have non- traditional materials (2) increase the maximum setbacks (3) have less than the minimum fenestration ratio, public doors and segmented facades; (4) allow parking and loading to be located between building and street line; (5) increase maximum heights; (6) increase maximum driveway openings to allow for angled street access parking and access to on- site parking and loading areas, for the new Downtown Events Centre
Here is the site plan for the events centre:

The most interesting thing I noted is that there is a prominent crosswalk across the Highfield Street extension at the SE corner of the events centre. They even have a traffic calming narrowing of Highfield Street in this location. The rendering below also shows this crosswalk (located at the lower left corner of the image).

Now, the question becomes "why would they bother putting a crosswalk here, when the only thing on the other side of Highfield Street in this location is the CN railway tracks". Could it be that they are actually planning on putting in a tunnel or a overhead walkway across the railway tracks to a planned (or anticipated) parking structure on the south side of the tracks?? Enquiring minds want to know.........

Finally, the diagram below nicely depicts the development site with relation to the surrounding structures.

I'm pretty sure I'll be going to the public information session at the Capitol Theatre on Monday, October 26th. I expect there will be some interesting information presented that was previously kept under wraps prior to the signing of the contracts. Looking forward to it.......

Too bad they have the that square section showing the parking on the shoulder continues a ways. If that was not there I'm sure the would render in if it's a Pedestrian tunnel, or overpass that that (what looks to be a) sidewalk goes to.

On a separate not I may not have been looking at the right areas but it's seems CNR may have sold off more the there property on the corner of Main St, and Vaughan Harvey , but may have also sold real estate they owned south of the track.

Can't wait to see what will be build, and how the downtown landscape might change in the next few years to come.
