I just hope someone has sat down with the council and explained to them that the airport money is separate and that _not_ doing the expansion won't lower taxes or build roads.

Wow. There are 5 phases to construction and actually building the terminal is the last on the list. 1st is bulldozing the unused state building in front of the terminal and 2-4 are all apron expansions.

If I am not mistaken, the east side apron expansions are required prior to being able to construct the new concourse extension.

Also, "temporary" jetways seem to be in the plan as to mitigate the ongoing needs/requirements of the airport during construction of the concourse expansion. However, I do not know where or how these will be laid out. So, some of these may jut out so far that, again, the expansion of the aprons are necessary to accommodate them.

Seems like the expansion was approved:

http://communityimpact.com/2015/10/1...n-zilker-park/

"Other Oct. 15 highlights:
Council unanimously approved a contract to begin expansion at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. A 30-year lease of 30 acres of land approved Aug. 27 will help open eight gates at the airport."

It was approved but Gallo, Zimmerman, and Renteria attempted to send it to committee first.

Well That Didn't Take Long....

After 6 months, Virgin America ending daily Austin-Dallas flights

 2:48 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015 | Filed in: Business

Virgin America’s service between Austin and Dallas Love Field didn’t last long.

The five daily flights, announced in February and launched April 28, will end Nov. 30, the low-cost carrier said Thursday.

Planes that had been used for the Austin-Dallas route will be redeployed, Virgin America said, allowing the airline to start service between Love Field and Las Vegas.

Virgin America said passengers with tickets for flights after Nov. 30 will be offered a full refund.

Central Texans hoping to get between Austin and Dallas Love Field still have an option. Southwest, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport’s dominant carrier, flies that route several times a day.

I wonder sometimes...how much can we possibly know about something prior to making a decision? It's mind-boggling. Obviously committees don't only serve the purpose of fact-gathering...

So there's a MD-87 tanker fighting the fire in Bastrop, and next week a DC-10 tanker is coming to help.

In 2011 this DC-10 tanker was used in Bastrop.

Tovo made a point that was somewhat similar. Pointing out that not every item needs to go to committee when there aren't any real policy questions.

The council discussion is about 20 minutes long. It's Items 6&7 here if you care to watch it: http://austintx.swagit.com/play/10152015-556

It's amazing how dynamic things can be. Last year if you'd have asked me, Tovo would be my least favorite council member... Now, she's possibly my favorite one. Yes, she may be a bit ANC nimby, but at least she's truly progressive and can't be bought or intimidated. I miss the days when the whole council was kind of like that...

Not a surprise at all. One cannot compete with Southwest on that route (which was established decades ago).

Yea that is true and then there's also American with multiple flights to DFW. It's not like we don't have plenty of flights to Dallas. I knew this was gonna happen sooner rather than later when I ran across that article about Virgin and the dismal performance of the route.

To give an idea, the Air Bridge Cargo plane is 205' long. Longest current aircraft.

250, not 205.

The An-225 is actually longer.

All of the previous 747's were 231 feet long, but the 747-8 is 250 feet. The Antonov-225 is the longest and heaviest plane in ever built. It's 275 feet long and they only made one of them. It also has the longest wingspan of any plane in operation. Only the Spruce Goose has a longer one.

Sorry, meant 250'. For new plane spotters, you can distinguish the 8 from the 400 by looking at the wingtips and engine nacelles.

I'm getting confused, are the recent length data fuselage length or wingspan length?
