I find it odd that the City has appeared so obstinate in insisting that the fire station remain undisturbed. Is this a negotiating tactic to get BRT to pay for a nice new fire station on site, or is it just the City being the City and averse to anything that might disrupt the status quo?
Because as it is, having that crappy 2-story cube of concrete mid-block really presents an obstacle to the optimal development of one of Center City's most notoriously gross and underutilized blocks.
You'd think the City would say something like "why yes, BRT, we'd love to work with you to make the most out of this long-blighted block, let's make it happen, we just need to include a fire station on site and at no cost to us". But that has not at all been the tenor of any comments I have heard from the City in this regard. Seems a shame to have to shoehorn BRT's project mid-block between a poorly sited dumpy old fire station and the ill-conceived memorial park.
