It's an honest effort IMO. I'll wait and see how it evolves and matures in the next few years before making my conclusion on it.

Slow down guys, I enjoyed my time, it is unlikely any development like this will be anything but a bit contrived, including the ice district, just trying to think how it cold be more like the area around Fenway or TD north. How do ^^we take new, modern districts and inject some character...

You used the the, a message has been sent to the authorities.

In order for it not to seem contrived -- I would use the phrase Disneyfied -- we need the layers of history and the local establishments. If we want our places to seem special they have to be different than others and not the same ten chains we see everywhere. But that's the economics these days and it's happening all over our cities.

I hate my city for not supporting local in the core. For the demolishing of lower rent buildings for new CRUs that are almost always another chain. People get excited about..."oh, I hope it's a Moxies" or a Cactus or a whatever flavor-of-the-month chain is. I want a good local restaurant not something that is everywhere else.

For me it was the placement and choices of establishments... the entire block facing the stadium should have been a variety of sized pubs and food places, create some atmosphere and a sense of place... that was lacking as places were spread out and no connected well visually. Hell, Milestone's (bleh) felt like Joey and Local's poor cousin way in the back.

I appreciate you going into greater depth here. I wasn't commenting with hostility or implying that you should have liked it more, I was simply confused by your comment and it wasn't clear to me what issue you were pointing at precisely.

It's tough when the whole area is controlled by one or two companies. You end up with a bit of a monoculture.

The land surrounding Lansdowne is basically like a power centre adapted to an urban context... I'm not sure that it will ever develop much character beyond what it has... there will probably always be a lingering "mall" feel.

That said, Lansdowne is a bit unusual in that you don't often see large swaths of land surrounding urban sports venues like that.

For a chain the Local isn't a bad choice, at least based on my experience with the one in Liberty Village in Toronto is. They have a legitimately decent selection of (actual) local craft beers and the food is ok for what it is. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there for dinner or anything but for grabbing a couple drinks and some snacks it's about as good as you'll get for a chain. I assume the Lansdowne location is similar.

no worries and dont get me wrong, it was overall a nice experience and there was great energy in the area, just a few odd choices.

At least this sort of activity/life was designed into the space. Regina's new stadium development has given no consideration to context. Just a large football stadium plunked down. One single use which will likely be void of life throughout the year.

Of course, perhaps with the redevelopment of Mosaic stadium into the 'Taylor Field' neighbourhood there may be some connections between the two areas - but I won't hold my breathe....

Well, plunked down right beside the arena, a 6-rink complex, indoor soccer complex, convention centre, exhibition centre, etc... There is definitely year-round use of the area it's in. So at this point it would be up to the private sector to decide if they think they can make a go of a business in the area. Sask Drive is a hop, skip, and a jump away.

They also plan on creating a pathway to downtown for easy movement (what will be about a 15 min walk).

Love the Lansdowne development. Incorporating the old stands and arena on the northside of the stadium site, along with the rustic charm of the Aberdeen Pavilion combined with the new retail and entertainment development and the condos on Holmbrook and Bank..all integrated into an interesting concept that will appeal to mixed income levels.

We're looking at the next SODOSOPA.
