I think that it's just confusing to use the green to differentiate the "Evergreen" part of the Millennium line. They should stick with plain yellow for it and blue for the Expo line, period.

Interesting that they are interlining between Lougheed and Production way. Supposedly the current M-line route was going to be cut back to Lougheed because it wasn't possible to continue interlining. It was help on that busy stretch though. I agree about the map, looks kind of silly. Hopefully that's just for introduction maps to show people what's going on, and later it'll just show the M-line.

The map is titled "Future Metro Vancouver Rail Transit Network" so I assume that green outline is just highlighting the new section. I assume that the map will not have the green outline when the extension opens.

That's what I'm guessing too.

I understand the desire to cut down on transfers for SFU students, but why not just run the 145 to Lougheed rather than interlining the trains? It would save a lot of headaches.

Yeah that posted map looks more like a slide for a PowerPoint presentation. The actual maps in stations/trains don't show the actual land geometry anymore, it's simplified so the lines are straight.

Longer 145 runs, higher operating costs, potential lowering of reliability, crowding of transit exchange, waste of Production Way facilities, increased travel times for those coming from the west... a multitude of reasons, really. Extending the Sapperton-Braid branch to Production would also fill in the gap at a much lower cost, and address any transfers that could potentially not be cross-platform at Lougheed.

Which is really annoying as you can't tell anymore that Patterson is a stroll from Metrotown while 22nd is several kilometres away from new westminster.

Does anyone know what the inside of the mark three train will look like? Will the new trains have bench seating similar to a New York subway?

They probably lied to us on the September arrival; however I am certain there is are a few artists renderings online. I know someone who works at the OMC.

From what I know, side windows are a bit lower, which indicates that there are forward facing seats.

Well the trains will be the same as the current trains and then whatever the Mark III's look like. However the platforms I'm not sure of, I believe 80 meters is the standard and I doubt they'd go any longer quite yet.

One of my main interests in the Vancouver Skytrain system is seeing the original MK1 trains phased out. They look and feel like toys, almost.

I want to see the MK I's phased out entirely because they have no A/C.

The MKII's I expect when it hits the mid-life refurbishment they convert them to A-C-C-C-B trains to gain more space. I'm given the impression that "cost savings" could be had by building C cars would be cheaper than building more A-B pairs.

(As a side note, when I went downtown last weekend, I had to wait for 3 trains of 4-car MK-I's to go by after 3pm before a MK II came by with standing room.)

With the refurbishment program underway you can expect to seem them around for another decade or two. IMHO it's a testament to the system that after about 30 years of service they're still in good enough condition to make that worthwhile.

I heard a rumour that the MKIs were never properly devalued over time on the books. So, they were showing as being a much higher value than they actually were, making a phase out quite embarrassing.
Hence the refit, and I imagine a sharp depreciation on the books in the coming years.

The only reason to keep MKIs in my mind is for my own nostalgia

If they took more seats out in the ends (I know, how would we cope), it would allow for more people on board in the interim.

That seems pretty unlikely to me. It doesn't mesh with how well the MKIs are still running - that's what makes the refurbishment worthwhile.

First generation anything always seems to look very space-age in comparison to later revisions where designs are changed to better suit the place they found in the market. MK I's were the first full-scale LIM trains to be marketed beyond the WHAT'S NEW section in an 80's issue of Popular Science.
