While I'm no fan of the Conservatives preoccupation with ethnic-oriented divisive politics, I find it hard to fault the political reaching out to certain demographics who do not feel represented in certain issues and attempting to provide a motivation to vote a certain way through said representation. At the end of the day, that is really what we are talking about here.

It reminds me of all the hatred towards Fox News, which isn't even that old by the way. Before Fox News came along, people seem to assume that the demographics who watch Fox News didn't exist, which is absurd. The popularity and success of Fox News shows that there are large swaths of people who want to be pandered too in the manner that Fox News operates and targets.

At the end of the day, the problem is not Fox News, or that the Conservatives use these divisive issues as a political tool - as much the problem really is that there are people out there who don't agree with you, don't think the same way you do, and don't come to the same conclusions regarding these issues. You may even think they are ignorant, uneducated, and/or not qualified to vote. But the existence of these people isn't going away just because we change government, and it isn't the government's job to remove these people from the voting population by ignoring what they think or what they have to say, and no one in a democracy is judge jury and executioner for who is smart enough to vote/who is too ignorant to vote.

If you have a problem with the way large swaths of Canadians think, that's a larger issue than a government reaching out to represent them. It is not Fox News which is the "problem", it is the conditions that allow Fox News to continue to exist and be widely successful.

Score one for the Conservatives! I really didn't think they'd have the cojones to dump the candidate. A valuable message has been sent to some of our cultural communities about real (as opposed to invented) Canadian values, imho.

This will likely result in the Conservatives not forming the next government. The exact same thing happened in Alberta in 2012 and support for the Wildrose was decimated. However, the PCs do have a bit longer to clean up the mess between now and the election than the Wildrose did.

Tories dump candidate who touts therapies to turn gay youth straight
'Is it wrong for a homosexual to become a normal person?' Jagdish Grewal wrote in editorial
By Jennifer Ditchburn, The Canadian Press

Quote:
The Conservatives have dumped Jagdish Grewal, a candidate in suburban Toronto who defended therapies that attempt to turn gays straight and who penned an editorial that referred to homosexuality as "unnatural behaviour" and heterosexuals as "normal."

"These comments do not reflect the views of the Conservative Party of Canada. We believe that all Canadians — regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation — deserve to be treated with respect and dignity," the Conservative Party said in a statement. "Mr. Grewal is no longer an official candidate for the Conservative Party."

Grewal, running in Mississauga-Malton, wrote an editorial in the Punjabi Post earlier this year entitled "Is it wrong for a homosexual to become a normal person?"

I think the Niqab issue has been beaten to death so let's move on..........

I think the TPP is an issue that Harper will not bring up and use on the campaign trail. Westerners may view it more optimistically because it gives them more opportunities to where to send their commodities. As much as this might hurt Western sensibilities, it's economy has changed little in 150 years.........haulers of water and tillers of the land.

Ontario and Quebec are quite the opposite. They are the nation's only manufacturing centres. They have nearly nothing to gain from the agreement and a hell of a lot to lose and Harper has just admitted it because you don't give a sector $1 billion when you sign a trade agreement unless you know it will hurt the sector.

It's bribe money but $1 billion is less than pennies and will be inconsequential in respect to the economic carnage it will leave in it's wake.

Like all things the devil is in the details but Harper's propensity for secret governance and controlling the message could really hurt him here because the longer he delays in revealing the whole agreement the more suspicious people will become. People will naturally assume that he has something to politically unpalatable to hide.

I thought I heard yesterday that a draft text of the TPP should be available in the next week or so (that might not happen if the parties have agreed not to release the draft until it's available in all languages). Initial reports seem to indicate that the "unpalatable" bits relating to supply management and the automotive sector may not be as bad as some had feared.

From what I've heard, the agreement allows something like 3.25% foreign access to Canadian dairy markets. Dairy producers are effectively unable to export under the supply management system, which means the size of the Canadian dairy sector will have to shrink by the same amount. Most comments I've read from dairy producers suggest that the reduction is disappointing, but certainly nowhere near the death blow to the industry that people had been crying wolf about.

The whole thing is ridiculous really. Lobbying to keep supply management by the dairy industry is nothing more than rent-seeking at the expense of consumers. Supposedly, the average Canadian family pays $300 a year more than they would without supply management. The entire debate comes down to whether you believe subsidizing dairy farmers (who quite often have incomes in the 6 figure range) to the tune of $300 per year is worth it.

I don't believe in giving certain industries special treatment. Either all agriculture in Canada should fall under supply management (which is ridiculous as it sounds), or none of it should. Beef and pork producers do just fine in Canada (they are significant exporters) without supply management. The whole system is a relic, and the only reason it still exists is because Quebec has a rather large number of seats in parliament and a very vocal dairy industry.
If people want local dairy products they can choose to buy them. Consumers should be able to make that choice for themselves.

I could really care less about the auto sector concessions. Regardless of what the government does, that industry is on the decline in Canada. The idea that it's "better" to have cars made in Canada giving jobs to Canadians is nothing more than economic nationalism. What about Mexican jobs? American jobs? Japanese jobs? Canadian jobs aren't inherently any better than jobs in other countries.
I'd rather save a few grand by having a car made somewhere cheaper and spend the extra money on other things, rather than pay more just to have it made in Canada. Offshoring manufacturing just means people can buy more goods and services for the same price. Even the most left wing economists (Paul Krugman types) would tell you that producing goods where it is cheapest is beneficial.

Re the auto sector, I doubt we'll see much of a drop in prices as a result in TPP. An increase in manufacturers' profits is far more likely as an outcome, imho.

As an election issue, I can't say TPP moves me much. We had to be in and that would have been the same whether the Conservatives or Liberals were in power.

Considering how low profit margins are in most of the automotive industry, that doesn't seem like such a bad thing.

And money doesn't magically vanish. Those profits will be used for something. They could go towards research and development (a good thing), higher wages (a good thing), higher dividends (a good thing), etc.

Pretty well the only entirely unproductive things corporations can do with higher profits are stock buybacks and increasing executive compensation.

Hey now, Harper's affection for kittens is about the only sympathetic aspect of that business-fixated automaton.

The niqab issue isn't really a left vs. right issue. At least not from where I stand. Most people I know are left or centre-left and all of them are against the niqab in official proceedings. This includes all of the feminists I know.
