I'm kinda glad... that thing was an eyesore. Unfortunately there are a lot of those downtown...

Apartments, or Condos

the FLATS -Midtown Moncton-

As they have them Advertised seems to be a "New Concept" only in the sense it is not seen as much in smaller cities

They have an Open House on October 5th, 7PM for anyone interested.

It seems weird to me for a city that is trying to pride itself on Family Friendly there are so many Adults only, or Mature Apartment, and Condo buildings going up...

This is their ad in the T&T today:

There is no indication as to where in "midtown Moncton" this might be built. I imagine it is a condo project, but I'm not sure - it could be rental. In any event, it appears designed for mature or adult living, but this is not surprising. There appears to be very little appetite amongst developers to encourage families to live downtown. The trend for the downtown to be the domain of singles, young married couples without children or empty nesters appears to be continuing unabated.

There was a piece on the CBC quite recently about housing discrimination in Ontario. I don't know the situation here but at least in Ontario it's illegal to discriminate based on family status (single, 1 kid, couple, older etc) with housing. A lot of people get away with it anyway though.

Not to say you can't target a certain demographic. My old apartment building was certainly pushed toward retired people, but by the time I moved out it was probably 1/3 young professionals and students. Not many families though.

Beggars can't be choosers with our vacancy rate.

There's not a lot of reasons for families to WANT to live downtown... yet. There aren't many schools downtown, Main St is still mostly restaurants, bars and banks. There's also some sketchy neighbourhoods between St George & Main. Replacing some old dilapidated houses with structures like this is a step in the right direction. Once the Events Centre gets built, hopefully some of the awaiting private money goes towards more family oriented living.

I live in a mature condo development in Dieppe. Most people who live here are empty nesters who downsized as we have. The developper ensured us of this when we bought as it was written in the condo regulations, however it is supposedly illegal and discriminatory. There are a few hundred condos and I don't know of any famiies with kids that live here. I think they are also just not attracted in this kind of development and tend to buy the duplexes all around the city.

According to all Canadian Provinces it is Discriminatory to deny someone housing based on any of the Following: Race, Religion, Gender/sex,Sexuality, Marital status/Family status, and age.

I feel like I'm missing one or more but this came about when landlords started telling tenants to find somewhere else to live because they had become pregnant.

Edit: Method of Income. Lot of landlords will refuse someone on welfare/disability, and it's illegal to do so.

There is a lot of work going on inside this unit, and the one next to it ( with the windows covered) the door was open today and they have combined the 2 units to make one...it looks like a upscale restaurant or pub? thought?

There was something about this before Moncton PAC 4-6 months back. Yes, they are combining the two store fronts, and it will be for a bar/cocktail lounge. I'm thinking it's for Navigator's, but I'm not 100% sure.

Nope. Navigator's is still there (entrance off Robinson Court).

I asked someone who knows what's going on, and he says the new bar on Main Street that bigrivernb snapped a picture of will not be associated with Navigator's.

I remember when the Navigator's rumour first came out, there was talk of them expanding and possibly be rebranding as "The Three Drinks" or some name close to that.
It'll be interesting to see what this is. I wonder if they will make use of the roof top.

The name kinda reminds me of the popular Quebec chain "Les 3 Brasseurs". The have expanded in Ontario as "The 3 Brewers". Excellent craft beer selection and food. They have several downtown locations. Something along this line would be a great addition.

Reported in the paper today that the downtown location of the Blue Olive will open officially on Saturday. They've already held their "friends & family" evening.

Here are a few pictures from the Blue Olive "friends and family" evening earlier this week (from their Facebook page).

This looks like it will be an exotic and welcome addition to the increasingly multicultural downtown culinary scene. There are several Japanese restaurants, an Indian restaurant, another Mediterranean establishment, standard Italian and Lebanese fare etc., as well as traditional steak houses and pubs like the Keg and the Pumphouse, and ethnic pubs like the Old Triangle. If you want high end, there are restaurants like the Windjammer too. The restaurant scene in Moncton doesn't need to take a back seat to anyone!

I find it interesting that the Blue Olive is opening the same week as it's complete antithesis, the "Yee Haw" southern flavoured Woody's Barbeque. I think this says something. There's room for any culinary style in Moncton.........
