Hainan wants to start YYC-PEK next year? Rumor scale 1-10?

Interesting... and if true, that'll be even better since it's not AC making YYC more airline diverse.

It'd be nice but equally shocking given the current climate. That said, if it's Hainan on the route, there would likely be a larger proportion of Chinese-originating pax as opposed to AC heavily relying on YYC-->China pax. Might just be a pipe dream but who knows, crazier things have happened. Perhaps coinciding with the new IFP opening...?

Rumor scale, I would give it a 5/10 on coming true.

Hainan has a history of chasing Air China. Chinese government has a one international route per airline policy which makes for some interest aviation political moves. For example, CA expresses interest in route so HU threatens to make a competing bid. This forces CA's hand. However sometimes CA doesn't make a counter offer and forces HU to take the route rights.

If HU makes a formal application for PEK-YYC, it will force CA and AC (by extension) hand. Obviously HU thinks PEK-YYC is serious business, bolstering the longterm prospects for the route.

Again while AC has not said anything official, their recent investor presentation have said 35% AC capacity increase on Canada-China between 2015 and 2017. This cannot be accomplished by larger aircraft, more dense aircraft, and additional frequencies on current routes, This bolsters my assertion that YYC-PEK is matter of "when", not "If".

Hainan wanted to start PEK-YUL as well, but alas, we all know what happened there.

Hainan recently announced PEK-TLV, with abysmal times in/out of PEK. They do not possess the same amount of slots at PEK compared to CA, meaning it will be hard for them to launch YYC with decent arrival/departure times.

Methinks YYC's best bet for PEK service still remains AC/CA.

Would WS even be in the running for a YYC-PEK route with the 763?

At 4,700+ nm I would think that it is surely outside the prime economic range for the WS configged 763, as some suspected YVR-LGW might have been at 4,100 nm. The immensely difficult acquisition of a PEK slot aside, the lack of a remotely proper J cabin would kill any chance of PEK.

I'd say chances are just a hair north of absolute zero (i.e. anywhere between -270 and -272)

Enjoyed watching from Quarry Park while a 747 took. You could tell immediately it was a bigger plane and it was nice and loud.

Interesting read about WestJet and the struggle to maintain its early identity as it has grown and expanded:

777-300 from KLM in the new livery inbound to YYC today. The 77W has come to YYC with some frequency over the summer hoping it continues into the winter.

I thought it looked a little different on takeoff today. Was wondering if somehow they had rushed a 789 into service right after delivery (it was from quite a distance, coming down Bow Trail).

Westjet has some bigger struggles than Calgary Herald reporter waxing eloquently about the problems associated with growth.

Heard over the weekend there are major problems with the 763 aircraft WS has yet to take ownership of and import into Canada. The hold up appears to be maintenance log issues over some mods done while the aircraft were with QF in Australia. Transport Canada has withheld final approval for Canadian operating certificate for the initial airplane pending maintenance records the Aussies don't have.

What is known is that WS will be looking at continued major delay for introduction of the 763. They will have to get temporary lift for the AB-Hawaii program for at least December period and probably into January.

At some point this is going to get into the media and WS will have egg all over their face. This is same maintenance paperwork issue was at the heart of WS September 1996 shut down. at that time, several maintenance requirements were reperformed to get the aircraft paperwork up to grade.

Seat Belts lights on, everyone get strapped into your seat its going to be a bumpy ride.

^ That sucks with the WJ 763 deal. Sounds like they are in the middle of this though it doesn't seem to be their fault. How would they know these used 763's may of been 'tinkered' to a point where our country's transport ministry deems basically unacceptable to fly based on canadian air laws? I feel their planes are very much airworthy to be flying for revenue use and made a smart choice taking QF birds, but is our country just being super anal with the approvals? They almost sound just like how the City of Calgary planning and approvals work! Basically not trust the authenticity & record keeping of the previous users professional logs and demanding proof to items that would of been grandfathered from previous instances. If QF doesn't have the answers to what Transport Canada is demanding, what next?

Sure the perfect solution would of been to buy new planes from the outright had the situation been right. I hope this doesn't start going to the media (though they are known to lurk the SSP boards, usually the Calgary Construction thread) at least not until a solution is already underway even if it means they have to D-check this plane down to each piece..

I still have faith it will be resolved in time for next spring's international launch.

^ Then again I might add these are used higher cycle 'domestic' 767s being refitted to fly internationally so I can see how there is a legitimate reason to fine comb this and take a lot of time doing so.

I can't recall any other instances of airlines taking used heavy domestic purposed jets and fly them on long haul sectors.

Does that mean they won't be heading to HI this winter? Will WS have to wet lease the Thomas Cook 757's again or do the flights one-stop via YVR?

This is the risk you take when you lease 21-24 year old planes in the first place, especially ones that are being used domestically with no ETOPS (at least not ETOPS 180). WestJet should have done its due diligence on this.

Maybe they should just dump these frames and try and get their hands on some Transaero 763s, now that the airline is going bankrupt. Some of those frames are only 15 years old and are ETOPS certified, as they often use them on North American runs.
