RE: Rousseau's note. It's very rare here and the effect isn't quite as good, but we have a couple of pockets of that. Presumably much more part of our downtown than Baldwin is for TO.

Yes, it's a little gem of a building. Apparently it cost $1.6M to do the restoration.

Here's another interesting picture I found of some cruise ships in what's called the seaport area of Halifax:

This area was the main port for the city from about the 1910's to the 1960's, when most shipping was containerized and moved to the new terminals. Before these long pier buildings were built, most shipping was done at smaller "finger wharves". Here's an example, Cable Wharf:

There used to be one of these after another, running for several kilometres along the harbour. If you look at old maps of Manhattan from the 1800's they are like that too; the whole southern part of the island was surrounded by little wharves.

Speaking of cruise ships, the Queen Mary 2 is here this weekend (the one behind her is the Norwegian Dawn, and there were a couple on the north side of the pier that aren't visible in my pics).

I went to check out a cheap building for sale in the St-Roch neighborhood (gentrifying slowly...) so we went on foot, using public transit in the form of the ferry service.

The pics are in chronological order (to St-Roch and back), with the one of the St-Roch church being the westernmost point in the series.

We stayed in the lower town, and I've been trying to make sure I took relatively nondescript photos (except for the train station), so the nicer areas are missing, I've just been taking pics along the direct route to where I wanted to go. There's zero pics of the upper town (the walled part, i.e. core). So, it's mostly just a "slice of life" on the way on foot from Lévis to St-Roch and back.

Did Frank Lloyd Wright design any major buildings in Saskatoon? His influence certainly shows in that city.

Here's another one, taken earlier this summer

Queen Mary 2 in foregroud, Maasdam behind it. For a sense of scale, the ship next to the QM2 is a medium-small container ship (I think that one was actually from St. John's). I'm not sure why container ships sometimes tie up next to cruise ships there (not the only time I've seen it happen this summer). It could be to get around docking fees or something? There was plenty of space at the container wharves each time I saw that happen.

I tried to get one when they were testing out the lifeboats, but my battery died

I thought of you because my gf pointed out she'd already seen that white one while in Florida (the NCL cruise ship). (Her family's always had a tradition of cruises so she knows the various ships and companies pretty well.)

And my reaction was, "why would it come here?"

I'd think that the type of tourist interested in cruises would rather be in Caribbean waters, if possible.

I don't think I've ever seen (or noticed) anything like that happening before. Seems a bit odd. I mean, how can they keep them that close without them bumping against one another with the movement of the water and causing scratches and dents?

There are big rubber/plastic bumpers alongside a lot of the larger piers - I'd imagine something similar could be wedged between the two ships.
