Hey, even if it's temporary (like the river drives on Sundays), it's a great concept. Something done on weekends and holidays seems the most practical at this point. More permanent closures would require a lot of advance planning, I would think.

It didn't go "kaput," it's still very alive and well. PMC bought the land and will be moving ahead with a development almost exact to the one the original developer envisioned.

Little snippet regarding Southern Land Co. and future Philadelphia developments

The project is Southern's first foray into Philadelphia, and, although they've currently got something cookin' at the high-profile parcel near 19th and Walnut, we've heard this won't be the only building they develop inside the uCity Square/Science Center area.

Frontier Airlines adds flights from PHL Airport

Getting to the Rocky Mountains just got a little easier.

Frontier Airlines announced Tuesday it would add nonstop service between Denver and PHL Airport starting March 17.

Frontier announced in April nonstop flights from Philadelphia to Minneapolis and Houston. The airline announced in January non stop services to Atlanta, Charlotte and Chicago from PHL Airport.

This is not good news, a boutique hotel being swapped with a pretender sterile corporate chain. Better for SLS but would much rather have Hudson and SLS.

If it gets it built, it IS good news. Hotels can always be sold to boutique chains, rebranded, etc. (that's continued to happen in Philly even up to this very moment), but FIRST they have to be built. With the potential merger of the owners of the SLS and Hudson brands, this may have been the only way to get both this and the SLS built at the same time.

I think this is actually good news. Hyatt Centric is a great and popular/hip new brand. Also as Philly Fan says, with the possible merger of SBE (SLS parent company) and Hudson Hotels, this is likely the only way to get an SLS built, which I would MUCH prefer over a Hudson.

However, it's good news in general that the building will be getting built and replacing this eyesore of a parking garage. This will also open the opportunity up in the future for a Hudson hotel to come to Philly - as long as SLS does well I assume.

Don't fret though, this is good news all around and adds to Philadelphia's recent boom in the hotel department. I mean how many hotels have we gotten in the past few years or are under construction/ in the planning stages?

Kimpton in the old Family Court Building? Four Seasons atop CITC. Also, I agree that the brand change is no big deal. I don't know whether Centric is similar, but I've stayed at the Hyatt 48 Lex boutique hotel in Manhattan and it was sufficiently "hip" and very well done.

Just to clarify, Hyatt's "Centric" brand is definitely meant to target a more well-heeled and "cosmopolitan" demographic. So far they've only opened or are planned for a handful of major domestic and international cities, including heavy-hitters like NYC, Paris and San Francisco. Although not cited in the below article, it's absolutely a positive that Philadelphia is now being considered as a targeted market:

Philly has clearly emerged as a key tourism market, which is why there's been an astounding amount of hotel investment in recent years. There's no need for the insecurity.
