On another note, how come no one posted about Suzuki calling JT a Twerp?!

David Suzuki Says He Called Justin Trudeau A 'Twerp'

Re. the Munk debate, as you said, it can be watched here - who watches TV anymore other than white-haired conbot supporters??
Yeah I read the Suzuki one too. Unfortunately any politician has to wear many hats and for Trudeau to win he can't be against every pipeline. Suzuki calling him that is funny though.

Edit: I didn't see the part you mention about Trudeau and the TPP. The only thing I saw had him saying he believes we should be able to maintain the supports for the dairy and automotive industries as Canada has managed to do that in past trade agreements.

I wonder how much of an issue the Canada-Saudi arms deal will become?

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/poli...-would-stay-under-wraps/article26105853/

It's definitely worth discussing. Will these vehicles be used to quash protests? Is it a good idea to help enable a dictatorship?

I hope Trudeau and Mulcair bring it up. What a load of hypocritical bunk!

Saudi Arabia has been buying arms from western countries for a long time. How is a multi-billion dollar sale a bad thing for the Conservatives? You mean the left is all of a sudden concerned about the plight of the Saudi people?

That said, I wonder if Trudeau has done his homework & investigated whether or not his dad's govt sold arms to Middle East countries.

For someone who purports to care so much about human rights and protecting innocent lives you sure are selective with your criteria. Let me guess, it doesn't matter if they're Arabs?

Silly question. But seriously, civil unrest is not a big problem in the Kingdom AFAIK. The big risk is participating in the Hajj - now, that might get you killed......

Technically Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy, not a dictatorship, but I suppose that's splitting hairs......

You're talking about a country that still beheads people.

Not sure how this is a left/right issue. I am sure there are plenty of conservative /libertarian types who dislike Saudi Arabia's regime. Even supporters of the deal and Harper himself probably have misgivings. It's worthy of discussion without becoming a silly partisan spat.

This is actually a good news story. It's $15B towards our balance of trade deficit and means 3000 jobs for the Canadian economy. The last time I checked, the Kingdom was an ally of ours.

Plus the fact it's LAVs we're talking about, not RPGs or SAMs and Saudi Arabia is a stable regime, therefore the chances of these vehicles falling into the wrong hands (like ISIS) is virtually nil. It's win/win/win.

I wish the rabid Liberal apologists on the forum would stop grasping at straws. Not everything the Tories do is absolutely evil. This constant attack dog vendetta that keeps cropping up here is doing nothing but polarizing the debate and hardening attitudes.......

I am certain that Harper himself is not comfortable with that. Dubious 'allies' are a reality in today's world. The question is how much co operation does this entail.

How is this sale hurting innocent lives? Nothing Canada will do can change Islamic culture.

You do know that Saudi Arabia is chair of the UN board for human rights?

- If you're summoned to court, you can't choose to be and remain masked.

- Can't bring a knife, AK-47, or any other type of lethal weapon aboard a domestic flight.

And as proof of what I'm saying, I will submit that these rules are extremely likely to be in force in countries with basically zero Christian heritage. Say, Japan, for example.
What I meant wasn't that the laws were created because of Christianity, but rather that if they had come into direct conflict with aspects of Christianity (or other dogmatic culture norm), that they very well may not have been created, or if they were, some type of accommodation, work-around, or exception would have been provided.

But as for specific laws, that's where it comes down to weighing the pros and cons of each one as mentioned in the rest of my post. If it's a rule that's too vital in protecting society or fulfilling some vital role, then no exceptions, religious or otherwise can be provided (so no ak-47s on the plane). But in the cases we've been discussing, that isn't applicable. The person's identity would be verified by someone in authority in a private space so they're no posing a security risk.

That said, let's play fantasy for a minute and say Harper get's a majority...........his days are STILL numbered. I hate to break your bubble but in that scenario it will be the Conservative party and his backbenchers who will make sure that he is not long for this world.

You see, wait for it, even your beloved Conservatives are as opportunistic as any of the other parties and that goes quadruple for anybody looking to lead the party and become PM. If he wins a majority the day after the throne speech all his beloved backbenchers and ooooo so trusted cabinet ministers will have their knives out. They will gleefully agree to everything the great leader says as they symotaneously stab him in the back.

All the MPs know that befriending Harper to get into his good books is a no-win situation, just ask Nigel Wright as he can certainly tell you how Harper steadfastly stands by his friends. The Conservative headquarters will also be plotting against him from day one knowing that he is "used goods" and is nothing but a drain on the party.

The Conservatives know that this election, whether he wins or not, is Harper's last kick at the can and they have to start looking for a replacement. It takes at LEAST 2 years to get a party leader. The party has to give the electorate time to get use to him and warm to his policies and persona. Also leadership conventions are extremely expensive and they cannot afford it one year before going into an election as it drains the war chest. The sooner the leadership review is over the longer they have to refill the piggy bank for a new campaign.

You see, it doesn't matter who wins, Harper is on his way out. IF he gets a fantasy majority he may survive for 2 years but if not the opposition will pull him down as soon as possible. Harper is not long for this world and the only conversation is who manages to kill him first, the opposition or his own party.
That's funny because I recall reading the exact same thing before the election in 2011.

Yup. I'll agree with O'tacular. Hopefully Trudeau brings this up tonight cause Harper's got the trump card.

So let's give up billions of dollars of cash and jobs aplenty right here in Canada for a symbolic gesture of refusing Saudi Arabia? Despite the fact they are guaranteed to get similar vehicles somewhere else? How effective is that symbolic gesture going to be in helping human rights? Should we stop all trade with Saudi Arabia too since it's clearly going to help the government. This is a rhetorical question.
