I seriously think that in maybe 15 years Toronto will be neck and neck with Chicago for #2 skyline in North America

And even if it isn't it will still be an awesome and enlarged / heightened skyline.

At the current pace it's not inconceivable. This discussion will have merit once Toronto finally lands a showstopper of a thousand+ footer to provide a solid anchor to the skyline (I know I know CN Tower, but it's just not the same thing...).

Toronto just needs 3 high quality 300 + towers and it will be on par or very close to it.

I was surprised how close they're getting in terms of the 200m category. Built and u/c not excluding proposed Toronto has 23 and Chicago has 29. But the gap is wider in terms of 100m, 150m and of course 300m.

Massing for sure but, quality doesn't matter too much. Doubtful Toronto's top 5 in height will match theirs at least not for a very long time. Density should take that long if current trends continue

The gap at 100 metres is only 47 towers. A snapshot comparison of 100 metre towers currently under construction produces a difference of 51. That's about +17 towers per year for Toronto with an average build time of 3 years, no? That only 5 years to surpass it.

I don't know, I count 5 more buildings and only one of them is tall That's nice for Winnipeg, but saying it will redefine the image of the city is a bit exagerated.

Yeah, both the before and after silhouettes could be "Some random city". It takes a little more than that for a silhouette to be iconic or instantly recognizable. (not trying to minimize the changes, just poking fun at the hyperbolic gif)

What I meant is that Winnipeg literally doesn't have a peak or signature rn. I didn't mean that it would become something absolutely amazing but that with the anchor of skycity and a few other fill ins,any random canadian could see and be like "oh hey that's Winnipeg".

Because Winnipeg just doesn't have any pinnacle.

I would say it makes Winnipeg look more generic. Few cities out there have a clump of three towers of equal(ish) height grouped together as the focal point. One building a bit taller than everyone else is quite generic.

Other than Toronto (and maybe Ottawa and Québec City), is there really any other city in Canada that is instantly recognizable by its silhouette? And I'm not talking about people like us who spent countless hours studying skylines in our spare time.

If you discount urbanism enthusiasts, then very few cities including those with the most famous skylines would be instantly recognisable in silhouette to those outside the local area.

The ones that would have the best chance are probably those with observation towers like Seattle, or if you showed a silhouette that included the ESB people would recognise NY. But then if you showed a building with a similar roof line like a couple in Atlanta, you'd fool most of them.

Non-urbanism enthusiasts do well to recognise most cities in a clear, high detail, perfectly lit daytime shot.

Good point. Even then, my parents often don't recognize Ottawa unless the Parliament or Château Laurier are in the shot.
