Klazu: I always thought the narrowness problem this section after the Second Narrows was that it was crossing a First Nations reserve and widening the highway was not easily possible. Its a terrible section of the highway that is very congested.
Has the interchange work at Mountain Hwy. started yet?
It’s been 3 years since Phase I of the TCH104 Antigonish NS Bypass opened in 2012 and it will be another year until Phase II is ready in Fall 2016.....extending it an additional 7.5 km to Taylors Road.
This is the current start/end of Phase I just east of Exit 33 at Beech Hill Road. This short 0.4km section connecting down the hill with the original alignment, including the overhead will be removed when the bypass in complete....then returned to a green field.
New alignment (below) between Phase 1 and II (overhead sign above is to the right)
This section of TCH104 cutting across the photo (below) will be removed, becoming Truck 4 and relocated to the overpass structure in the distance.
Below is the new structure at Exit 34 in Lower South River. It will be the jct with Route 316.

Any idea when the rest of 104 will be twinned?

Reason: Quoting many large images; removing redundancy
Long way off. The proposal back in June to twin 8 sections of highway in the province including the 104 all the way to Sydney (including a new section from St. Peters to Sydney) is under discussion but only seems like the section to Port Hawkesbury is a shoe-in.
Some new pictures of Autoroute 20 east of Wolf River, QC. These photos were taken on a road trip that I took back in May. The two-lane extension of Autoroute 20 from east of Cacouna to Trois-Pistoles is scheduled to open this fall, so these photos are definitely a bit out of date:
Wolf River, QC? Ha. Rivière-du-Loup. Stomping grounds of my former classmate, Mario Dumont (ADQ). Nice part of the country.

Great. Will be going that way in a month. Hope to get some pictures of the progress.
Also got a dashcam so maybe I can get a video of that section of highway as well.
BC Transportation Ministry is looking at the feasibility of building a fixed link between the Lower Mainland of BC to the sunshine coast (which currently requires two ferries if going to Powell River from Vancouver)
Here's some pictures taken this week from the third and final pavement contract. We've just finished the contract's sixth week of progress and only one more to go. The weather is great as we've lost only three rainy days and next week is also looking good! The opening ought to be on schedule in November.
This is a roundabout on Route 8, which is the old TCH routing through the city. (The new TCH takes a different route around now, but this is still the main highway to lead to the north eastern NB cities). The roundabout links/crosses Route 8 with Smythe street (a major North/South artery through the city) and Bishop Drive, which leads to the biggest mall in the city.
One of these days, likely 10-50 years from now, Highway 417 will extend from where it is now near Arnprior, west.
I would think that it would go as far as Sault St Marie.

Most of it is there. There is enough space to build it to proper freeway standards.
If they put in the exits at the major cross streets, this would give 16 exits.
Thoughts?
I believe the plan is to twin the Southeast and Southwest Bypasses, and build a new alignment to reach the Maley Drive extension and north of the existing corridor to Wahnapitae. There would be no new interchanges along the bypass until the current end of the bypass near Coniston, but grade separations would be built at Fielding Road and Southview Drive. I see no reason why they can't start building it soon...
That is preferable in my opinion, since a northern bypass does not grab any traffic from 69/400, forcing them onto a 2-lane corridor to reach 17.
